What Is Pros And Cons Of Windows Update?

This question raised after a problem I faced a few weeks ago. That time, after passing the validation test for a application, my laptop automatically updated itself with the windows update.

However, after a few days, Vista identified that my application is not genuine anymore. Though now problem's solved, I read somewhere that the best way to avoid this problem to happen again in the future is to DISABLE WINDOWS UPDATE.

I just would like to know what are the pros and cons to turn off this automatic windows update?

Pros:

1) you'll have control over which updates are installed - in some instances updates will fix something and break something else.
In fact it is best practice in many professional environments only to update with hot fixes that are specifically aimed at specific needs (e.g. if you dont need .NET 3 for any of your apps, there's no need to install it and related updates to it).

Annoying.
Forces Restart
Annoying

Cons:
you have to check for updates manually and if following the above approach check out every update to see if it is needed - a time consuming process

In general it is advice able to use auto update to make sure that the machine is always patched with the latest security fixes.

Keeps viruses away (only from the security exploits, NOT an anti virus)

If your using vista all I do is set it to let me choose what to install and hide the update called "Windows Genuine Advantage" That is the service that checks system Validity, if you hide it then it will not be downloaded an you can use windows update without any trouble, hope that helps

I have mine set to download automatically and prompt me to install. Sometimes it's annoying to have it sitting there asking to install, and again asking to reboot, but at least I can have a look and see what's actually getting installed.

The reason Blaster worm fucked millions of computers a few years ago was because those PC's were NOT updated.

Set your Updates to Let me Choose what to download & Install. Just don't install anything that says Windows Genuine Advantage

Cons, none, pro's... many!

What I do not like is windows telling me what to install... one XP update killed my internet, if you do it by hand, you can easily drop back to the pre-update install, if windows does it auto, then you will have to spend ages identifying the things it put on your system, then the one that is at fault, thing is, windows downloads them ALL then installs them one after the other making identification of the offending update harder....

also, I have heard tell that some Trojans can use the auto update feature to install some really nasty shit on your computer... so, its always best that YOU decide what and where.... windows is way too easy to hack.... auto updates is just another way in....
