Wireless Internet Share: Weak Signal Problem

My friend leaves couple of houses next to me and i wonder if i can share his connection. I can see his access point from inside my house but signal is weak to lock on.

Is the port forwarding the same? Can i use wirelessly he ports that are unlocked from the router for faster torrent and direct downloading?

Are there any 3rd party software for finding and connecting to open networks? The one coming with my wireless adapter is not that handy. I have an asus eee 701 with an atheros wireless adapter and i need to set separate profiles typing the SSID name each time i want ot connect wirlessly.

802.11g normally about 30-50ft max you can ask your friend to move the router closer to your house if possible.

Port forwarding is down to the router it wont affect your wireless access its to allow applications to connect via direct ports to your pc Eg to play WoW or as you said download torrents

If your laptop cannot already see an open network when you scan for available wireless using your pc the chances are they are too far away for you to use that network.

could try asking friend to purchase a wireless repeater, it increases the distance of the signal and strength not sure how well they work but ive heard they work pretty well.

You could get a better antenna, better card, and a parabolic reflector to increase signal strength. With a directional antenna, G connections have been established over more than 50 miles.

My setup is a 500 mW card with a half a meter 10 dBi omnidirectional antenna. It goes through a couple of walls and houses, but reception would be better if I mounted it on my roof
