Join Windows Server Standard FE to Windows 2012 Essentials

We have a Windows server Standard FE that we want to retire and install a Windows 2012 Essentials box in its place. The FE box is a domain controller currently and I would like to join the new Essentials machine to the current domain to move the active directory over.
Is that possible with Windows Standard FE? I know my options are somewhat limited with FE but we are basically only joining the two together long enough to move the server roles and AD over to the 2012 Essentials machine and then retire the old box.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, it is possible. For 2012, follow the TechNet article for migrating from SBS. That covers the basics of creating a migration file and starting that install, which will join essentials to the existing domain as a replica DC. Just skip the bits that don't apply to hour environment, such as exchange and sharepoint.

I am familiar how to do it with a regular 2008R2 server to Essentials 2012. Just didn't know if it was limited on FE
