Decommissioning old WIndows Server 2003 which still runs AD Domain AD CA serve role safely

People,

I have one old Windows Server 2003 which still runs as the old AD Certificate Authority server issuing SSL certificates to the custom internal software, so I wonder how can I decommission safely this server without affecting the application workflow or any side effect to the users ?

I need some guidance in transferring this server role to the latest Windows Server 2012 R2.

Thanks

i went through this exercise about a year ago

here is the guide i used
there is a lot to it but worked out well; suggest you read through it first to understand everything and plan accordingly

OK, So do i need to provision the new server with the same name after I decommission the old win2003 box ?

Is there effect or downtime to the users during the decommission process ? Does it have to be after office hours ?

doesn't have to be the same name
if you chose to do that then yes, the 2003 server will need to be removed from the domain first

they won't be able to request certificates while one is down and the other is not yet provisioned

Does it have to be after office hours ?

not required; did mine on the weekend just because of internal change control policies

Thanks !
