need to monitor pc's with either internet or VPN disconnections

hi, I have a remote site that keeps reporting RDP and outlook disconnects. my main problem is the user never contacts me when it happens, so I can't run tests remotely or over the phone in time.

Is there any type of simple software that can permanently test the connection to the internet and over the VPN, so that I can judge if the VPN or broadband is dropping.
some kind of permanent ping would do, that logs failures.

cheers in advance

You can use Netgong. It will monitor connections from a PC or server to multiple connections. It is basically a ping tool that can be set to ping multiple devices at 'x' minute intervals. You can set it up for example to ping the local router, an ISP's gateway, an internet site, the remote VPN router, and/or a device on the remote network. It will maintain an html log of failures and can be set to send alerts if there is a failure. The application is reasonably priced and has a 30 day free trial period.

If you are using hardware VPN, set up logging and be able to access the logs. This will generally tell you.

Two common causes for disconnects:
1. People lose track of time and the connection times out.
2. The connection is flaky (common), VPN is picky (packets lost), and disconnects.

The logs will shed light on this.

thanks rob

I should have added, by monitoring different points between client and host you can determine where the connection is being dropped.
Cheers!

I've seen the ping rate drop at about 96% when over the VPn and nothing when pinging google.
