Windows updates

Dear Sirs,

Thanks in advance.

I am responsible for software update deployment for my company. Its MNC and there are nearly 1lakh and above computers in the domain. We are able to apply patches regularly without any issue, but in recent days I have been observing that there are more number of computers in the unknown column. More in number is 20000 and more like that. I would like to understand the reason for the unknown status.

Kindly help me for troubelshooting the issue.

Also kindly help me understand the folowing also

installed
required
not required
enforcement status unknown
unknown.

Thanks
Venkat

installed -- installed
required -- required but not installed
not required -- could have been superceded by another update or not applicable for this machine
enforcement status unknown --you can configure update enforcement -- here you have not set a policy
unknown. -- none of the above.

These extra computers where are they coming from? you can restrict WSUS to your local network and not the WAN.
