Implementing RRAS and remote access policy

Implementing RRAS and remote access policy

Hello to all of you,
I'm upgrading my infrastructure to windows server2012 R2 and now I'm doing the VPN server .
I need to grant access to the network only to the IT department people .
In the past I manually went in ADUC remote access permission and check the box "Allow Access" but now I want to use security group and use the remote access policy.
Can you confirm that this is the right way and if you can recommend a simple step by step installation.
Thank you
Carlo

not much changes though by adding roles for Remote Access, DirectAccess and VPN (RAS), IP and Domain Restrictions, IIS Management Scripts and Tools, Network Policy and Access Services Tools, and Windows Internal Database.to win2012
http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2014/05/19/configuring-vpn-on-windows-server-2012-r2-essentials.aspx
you can check for the events for RemoteAccess-MgmtClient and RemoteAccess-RemoteAccessServer on the Event Viewer.

Hello,
thank you for your message but I'm looking for a documentation on how to setup a VPN server to allow staff to remote access using RRAS and as a requirement I need to allow only people belonging to a specific security group.

thank you
Carlo

if you are referring to this
If you will like to authenticate the remote access users using work-group credentials – then RRAS server need not be joined to domain.

“Yes, set up this server to work with a RADIUS server”. Select this option, if you will like to use Radius based authentication. In this scenario there are two options: RADIUS server installed on some other machine or on the RRAS server machine.
(Configuring RRAS as a VPN server) http://blogs.technet.com/b/rrasblog/archive/2009/03/25/remote-access-deployment-part-2-configuring-rras-as-a-vpn-server.aspx ...

and
Click on “Policies” node, then click on ”Network Policies” node. Network policies allow you to designate who is authorized to connect to the network and the circumstance under which they can or cannot connect....

Condition: If ALL the conditions match against the connection request, NPS uses this policy to authorize the connection request, else skips this policy and evaluates other policies (if configured)
“Operating System” – specifies the OS for remote access client computer to match this policy
“Windows Groups” – This condition specifies the remote access user’s group inside Active directory.

Can you try the following:Check all windows services via services.msc and sort on the column startup type. All services that are on Automatic should be running, can you please report back which are not.
Check the Windows System Eventlog for errors/warnings.
Try to boot into safe mode, when server boots press F8, to see if the problem is also with safe mode.
Did you also check the task manager to see if there are processes which are using a lot of CPU ?

The same issue occurs in safe mode
I do not know how to open services from the task manager.. Since that is the only program I can access from blank screen
I've tried connecting to services remotely from my machine but it errors out

Can you try File |New Task (Run...), type: services.msc and press OK
If the window does not open.
On the Application tab of the Task Manager "Services" should be visible.
When right clicking on "Services" select "Switch To"

You might also try to run File |New Task (Run...), type: mmc.exe and press OK
If the Management Console loads, from the File menu you can select Add/Remove Snap-in... and then Add...
to add e.g. Services, Event Viewer and Device Manager.

Ugh
When I try to run services.msc it errors out with access denied
When I try to run mmc.exe it errors out with class not registered
And I made sure to open mtsc /v:server name /console

Which is best version of Windows 7 in dual-boot with Ubuntu 14.04 for very small business

I have six (6) PCs in my very small scientific consulting business. My primary OS is Linux (Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit) and all but one PC (home-built based on Intel i7-4770K processor) are dual-boot Ubuntu 14,04/Windows XP Pro SP3. The XP is for a couple of legacy applications for which there is no satisfactory Linux-based substitute. I understand that what I like need is a fully-licensed copy with support that I can put on my PC and get Microsoft support, if necessary. When I have gone on the Internet looking at pricing, it appears that there are several different version of Win 7 pro on sale. Advice from the experts would be most appreciated.

Thank you,

John

For any business use, Windows 7 Pro 64-bit is the correct choice. Ultimate and Enterprise have features I do not need. I used Windows 7 Pro 64-bit for about 5 years before moving on to Windows 8 Pro 64-bit.

Also consider VMware Workstation and the ability to run both system simultaneously. I do the latter.

In either case use Windows 7 Pro.

I agree. Never go for any home version of Windows. Always at least go for the professional version. Ultimate is probably not necessary, and Enterprise is only available as a Volume License anyway, so that will not be an option.

Windows 7 Pro gives you the ability to run Windows XP mode on it and thus XP applications on it.

See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-NZ/windows7/products/features/windows-xp-mode

See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-NZ/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7 for lots more information.

This is a legal copy of Windows XP that you download from Microsoft.

Note that you can't run XP mode on anything but Windows 7 so there is no upgrade path.

Windows 7 Pro is the best option as it enables networking support that the Home version does not.

Thank you very much for your assistance. I have already ordered a copy of Win 7 Pro 64-bit.

John

Good to hear and it should work well for you. I have a Windows 7 Pro virtual machine when I need it

hey guys,

we have some remote users, and we dont know if they are actually working on their pc. They may log on and not do anything. I guess what i'm looking for is an alert to see if they are "idle" is there any software that does this?

I've used Spector (both 360 and CNE Investigator) in multiple government organizations and it does the job well. It's got time logging, screen shots, video playback, keylogging, everything you could ask for. You have all the documentation you need to assess efficiency. http://wwwspectorsoft.com

Remote users, using a terminal server or just logged into corporate network?

If they are using Terminal servers, then you can use tsadmin tool or RDMS UI

In Windows 2003 there was tsadmin.exe where you can check the users idle time.
In Windows 2008 the command changed to tsadmin.msc
From Windows 2012 tsadmin tool was removed, but you can use RDMS UI for this (idle time column is not showing by default in connection panel but you can enable it).
(or if you prefer the old tsadmin tool, you can copy some files over from windows 2008 box)

You can use some powerscript too, for example check this page: https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Get-UserSessions-Parse-b4c97837

Disable TRACE and PUT methods

Disable TRACE and PUT methods

Hi There,
I would like to disable PUT and TRACE verbs on Windows 2008 IIS that is running Terminal Services and Desktop RemoteApp.
I cannot find any information if PUT or TRACE is a requirement for Terminal Service or if can be safely disabled without breaking anything,
Any thoughts ?
Thanks,

Run a packet monitor such as wireshark to see if PUT and TRACE are used at all.

PUT might be used when transfering files over a RDP mapped drive.

I'd be surprised if TRACE is used in any form; but would test clipboard use while running wireshark just to make sure.

More likely then not RDP over HTTP is normal RDP traffic in some sort of encapsulated tunnel based on HTTP or HTTPS.

Would I be able to see TRACE and PUT inside https traffic using wireshark?

Yes, you can, however it requires a bit of prep work here is a great read up on it: http://packetpushers.net/using-wireshark-to-decode-ssltls-packets/

An easier solution might be to run something like Fiddler (http://www.telerik.com/fiddler) .

If you have HTTP logging enabled, you will find the verbs used under "cs-method" column in the log files. It's a lot easier to enable logging than to drop wireshark on a server and try to interpret/analyze trace logs... IMHO.

Windows Server and Exchange upgrade recommendation?

Windows Server and Exchange upgrade recommendation?

We are a small Church with about 20 users. I have finally gotten the OK to upgrade from Server and Exchange 2003. Budget is tight. I have just enough for OS upgrade and additional memory for the servers. Currently we have two servers. I am looking for advice as to which versions of Server and Exchange would be recommended. Our users are on Windows 7 pro with Outlook 2010. I would like to give their mobile devices access to email as well. A few users are working remotely via VPN when travelling.

Typically, it is recommend to go with the latest version of Server and Exchange that is available. When you purchase licenses/CALS you are buying the latest version that is available. You can however these licenses are down gradable but when you are using the most recent version of OS and Exchange it has the longest life cycle.

Personally i would not implement a new infrastructure with older software. Go to the latest Server 2012R2 and Exchange 2013 CU8.

Also Exchange 2013 is designed to perform better on single server hardware, which will save on additional server/licensing costs.

Will.

Agree with Will, just wanted to add: if you're nonprofit you can get some major cutdown for the licensing pricing from Microsoft, you should check out if you're eligible:
http://www.microsoft.com/about/corporatecitizenship/en-us/nonprofits/whos-eligible/

I would move all users (only 20) to Microsoft O365 account to online O365 MS subscription

No need to maintain separate AD and Exchange only for 20 users

This is best possible option I see as compared to maintaining on premise infra

Thanks for the help.

Win 7 Desktop became bluish (not BSoD) when mouse is released (&

Win 7 Desktop became bluish (not BSoD) when mouse is released (& possibly Ctrl key pressed)

Quite often after moving the mouse & my right hand let go of the mouse (& possibly I may
have pressed Ctrl key), the Desktop will become bluish as shown in attached.

I'm not exactly sure what I pressed (as I can't consistently reproduce this) that bring up
this disruptive bluish desktop. To recover from it, I just move the mouse & click on the
Desktop & it will recover.

Not sure if it's related but currently when I pressed the fullstop ie the . key which is also
the key/button with > on it), it will often activate a key below it: it's the key between the
right Alt & right Ctrl keys on my Thinkpad X220 keypad) & this will bring up a little menu:refer to attachment 2's screen (in a browser, while typing the . key, it will pop up a menu
with Undo, Redo, ...). Our laptop support guys gave me a USB keyboard to use & it seems
to help so far while reinstalling the entire Windows 7 did not help so we're inclined to
believe it's a keypad hardware issue as the . key was just right above that key (I can take a
photo of that key if needed; I dont know what's that key called).

Let's resolve the disruptive bluish screen first as our IT guys are going to order a spare
keypad for my X220 later.

This very same Logitech Darkfield Anywhere mouse did not trigger this bluish desktop
issue when used on another Windows 7 PC

The blue-ish Desktop you see is the Aero Peek feature in Windows 7. You can trigger Aero Peek by either moving your mouse to the bottom right hand corner of your screen and hovering it over the Show Desktop button or by pressing the Windows + Space keys on your keyboard simultaneously.

Keeping a document synk on two computers

Keeping a document synk on two computers

Hi, I have two identical HP computers and would like to keep ONE document synk on both computers. So if I make a change on one, it automatically changes the other. What is the best way to do that. I have my system at home setup as a network (wifi). The computers are HP ENVY 15t.

Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, Box (to name a few) - any of those will do that. Just save the document in the Sync folder (whatever you set it to be) and it will sync to the cloud, then the other computer will sync the change.

Dropbox works and I use it. However the volume of files I have exceeds (by a lot) what I want to do with Dropbox. I have a setup in my home office with two computers and I use Sync Back Pro to keep 50 GB of files in sync. It is not automatic. It can be scheduled but I just run profiles frequently.

When I away for a week or so, as is the case now, I just sync it upon return.

what said above or use brief case and share it over network, so the update is synced across

What is brief case? Does that come with Windows?

Briefcase more or less died with XP. It came with Vista but did not work. That is why I moved to Sync Back Pro. It is vastly more robust and reliable and works with greater quantities of data.

How can I force Microsoft Windows 7 from going into hibernation?

How can I force Microsoft Windows 7 from going into hibernation?

My Windows 7 Professional machine goes into hibernation when I am away from the device for over 40 minutes. This interrupts batch programs that I run -- some of them requiring six hours.

Microsoft recommends as administrator giving the DOS command "powercfg.exe /hibernate off" in the root directory of the volume containing Windows. Very nice, but it doesn't work.

How can I get the machine to stay awake until it finishes intense batch jobs?

See if the Microsoft FixIt for hibernation helps you.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920730

You can also try deleting the hidden file hiberfil.sys in the root directory.

Try the FixIt first.

You can also lengthen the time to hibernation to 3 hours or more.

Set Sleep and Hibernation times to 0. That should disable them. These settings are in the Power Options Control Panel. Click on the hyperlink to "Change plan settings" then click on Change advanced power settings.

You must run cmd as admin.

Turn off hibernation
powercfg -h off
Set standby to infinite (0) according to power source
powercfg -change -standby-timeout-ac 0
powercfg -change -standby-timeout-dc 0

This gives the same result as suggestion from Lee W. I guess that in your case, after you issued turning off hibernation (it works :) computer was still going to sleep.

You say "powercfg.exe /hibernate off" doesn't work. In what way doesn't it work? Do you get any error message when executing that command? Might there be a policy set that doesn't allow things like that to be changed?

I'm guessing that the significantly changed network stack code in 2k8 and 2012 are your issue. We've run into this with many apps that are looking for the API entry points for networking that either no longer exist or have an entirely different underlying schema.

What I'm getting at is that you may have to fall back to running this on 2003.

A second 'test' RADIUS server on a Windows 2008 R2 domain

A second 'test' RADIUS server on a Windows 2008 R2 domain

I want to test a wireless controller and access point combo from another manufacturer.
I don't want to mess with the active NPS config and its RADIUS controller, so I'm thinking of spinning up a new one on a different DC. I can't seem to find any info on this scenario. Could this cause a problem?
Environment: Windows 2008R2 functional domain, NPS using only RADIUS services, no health policies, etc.

absolutely no problem.
You point different wireless controllers towards each of the different Radius servers. Other than that, no probls

absolutely no problem.

Thanks Jacob!
Logically I figured it shouldn't be an issue because, as you state, controllers or APs are added into the RADIUS config. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some 'under the hood' issue with multiple NPS instances on a single Domain.
Cheers

Unreadable font color

Unreadable font color

Lately, links and email addresses in emails and some web pages are in a light yellow color that is unreadable against the default white background. Haven't found a way to change the font color that affects the color of the links. Any suggestions?

BTW, this was discussed at Microsoft already: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie11-iewindows8_1/hyperlinks-have-turned-yellow-windows-81/9eef186b-206b-4910-8f43-ccc505b59e3c

And Windows themes seem to be the main culprit.

Your browser displays color defined in the HTML or in CSS etc. It means the color which the code author decided about (and the browser does not take the default color option into account).

You still have a few options:- Press CTRL-A and the page gets selected and all colors inverted so they are better readable
- It should be sufficient to position the mouse cursor at the text and the color may change
- Adjust colors in Windows or directly on your monitor
- Use some http proxy application which changes all yellow links into a different color
- Use browser add-on which changes colors, e.g. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/high-contrast/djcfdncoelnlbldjfhinnjlhdjlikmph?hl=en
- or turn browser accessibility options on: http://www.mediaaccess.org.au/web/web-browsers/how-to-turn-on-accessibility-features-in-google-chrome

In Windows Live Mail, you can change the default colors of fonts in emails you create and those received! Here is an article that gives you the details: Change font color and text size default in Windows Live MailTo customize your formatting options and change the font for all emails you write, click on the "Windows Live Mail" menu (top left button), and go to Options > Mail...

By default, Windows Live Mail will show messages you receive in the font specified by the message. If no formatting information is specified (or if the email was sent in plain text), Windows Live Mail will use "Segoe UI" for rich-format emails without font specified, and "Courier New" (monospace font, like a typewriter) for plain text messages. To change that, click on the "Windows Live Mail" menu (top left button), and go to Options > Mail...

paulsuave - I see options to change the font type and size, but not color in Windows Live Mail.

It seems that you are right - only font type and size can be change.

I suggest that you reinstall Win Live Mail... You may not have the latest version (Windows Live 2011 is the most recent).

Download Windows Essentials

This should update to latest version...

I just restarted the whole system (reload from scratch) on a new hard drive a few weeks ago, along with MANY updates to the version on the Restore discs, so I'm pretty sure I have the latest. But I will check.

Also changed to the Windows Classic theme - that seemed to take care of the problem. Links are now blue. I haven't done a thorough check of all variations (mail, web pages, etc.) but will do that before declaring victory.

New-but-basic Windows 8 Desktop PC - what would be a good boost in

New-but-basic Windows 8 Desktop PC - what would be a good boost in graphics performance?

My work Windows 8.1 Pro desktop PC is fairly basic. It isn't the most powerful but I have plans to use it for years. I am wondering if I can get a noticable boost in graphics performance with a graphics card.

Summary
I do NO gaming.

I use Office programs, occasionally program in Access or MySQL, do research online a lot, stream videos, and a couple times a year edit movie clips with Movie Maker. Not the most sophisticated graphics!

Here's the thing: I built my PC with some new stuff: motherboard, CPU, RAM. I brought two SATA3 HDDs with me, as well as my wireless keyboard, mouse & 23" HD monitor. I also installed an older PCIe 2.0 graphics card with 1 GB DDR2 RAM.

I looked at benchmarks for graphics at passmark.com and the integrated Intel HD 4400 was rated higher than the GeForce GT 220 card.

Details
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
Intel Core i3-4150 CPU
Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H motherboard
(2) WD SATA3 HDDs, 1 TB each
Crucial Ballistix 2x4 GB PC3-10700 DDR3 RAM
Samsung Syncmaster 2233 1920x1080 monitor
Antec Earthwatts 500W PSU

Is there a decent graphics card for less than $100 to boost my performance? Or would I be better off using the integrated graphics - and perhaps using less energy?

Note - at some point, I plan on installing an SSD at least big enough for Win8/10. This has been a budget build, converting from a previous PC; not going to break the bank on any components.

you can try this graphics card, for $99 at tigerdirect.com independent grahics with their own processor always boost performance. However you did mention that it was an older card.

XFX Radeon R7 250 Video Card - 1GB GDDR5, PCI-Express 3.0 (x8), Low Profile - R7-250A-ZLF4

XFX Radeon R7 250 Video Card - 1GB GDDR5, PCI-Express 3.0 (x8), Low Profile - R7-250A-ZLF4

I like the features - 1 GB GDDR5, PCIe 3.0, the price is very reasonable. But when I compare it against my old card as well as the integrated Intel, the Intel shows higher 2D graphics. Is this really possible? I went to passmark.com for the comparison:
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2643&cmp[]=2768&cmp[]=72

And I found an MSI AMD Radeon R7 250X 2GB GDDR5 - would twice the GDDR5 be better?

try another benchmark

?? I don't know of another. Do you?

I never understood why people use benchmark, I never did and I never will use it.

I purchase computer parts based on use of the computer, for example if I was still editing photos and videos I would buy the above card, along with a motherboard with 2600fsb memory 2000fsb DDR3L or 4 somewhere around 8-16 gb ram.
what you need is memory and a good graphics card that process its own rendering. If you were rendering block buster movies then the card you need is not on the market.

benchmark means nothing.

[Help Searching Windows Files] TurboTax 2014 missing Files/Dissappeared please help

OK, so my dad was using turbo tax and he saved his documents and then closed turbotax and then he remembered wanted to do a backup of this file and it wasn't there to even load so he couldn't do a backup... 1, would anybody know what has happened here and how the files disappeared... 2. A window file search, is there a way to search for files modified on that date or something, actually i did a DATE MODIFIED search but too many dox came up and didnt see any turbotax docs but there were so many files that when i sorted it i was hoping to see a turbo tax sort column but i didnt... I did also try a *.turbo2014 or .tax2014 whatever there files use and i didnt see the said file... maybe im not doing a good enough search... I wish it worked more like mac with the recent file search in spotlight, it lists all the most recent files that were aved or modified.... Maybe there is a temp folder where turbo tax keeps files where it may make saves on docs while the program is open... Basically he cant find the files he was working on and DESPERATELY needs help finding them.. He worked on this document for 2 or 3 hours and now all his work is gone... Please help!!!!

Maybe it was the online version?

Maybe it was the online version?

When you start TurboTax again, can he open the file?

Two ideas:
(1) TurboTax 2014 uses a file type of:
.tax2014

So do a search of his entire hard drive for *.tax2014 — and do it on all partitions, if it has more than a C drive (D, E, etc.).

(2) Run TurboTax via Start>All Programs>TurboTax 2014>TurboTax 2014. It should give you a dialog to continue your return. It looks like this:

Look here: C:UsersusernameDocumentsTurboTax . This is the default folder for Turbo Tax files.

My extensions for file are .tt14

Look there and see if you can find the files.

John,
That's interesting — I wonder if it depends on country/edition (I know you're in Canada). I've been using the U.S. Home & Business edition for many years. I checked the past five years — all of the extensions are .taxYYYY. Regards, Joe

Multiple Windows 2012 Servers backing up to same hard drive?

Multiple Windows 2012 Servers backing up to same hard drive?

If I use the Windows Server 2012 built-in backup, it seems the backup hard drive is formatted in a way that can only be used by Windows Server backup.

My question is, can i use the same physical hard drive as a backup drive from another installation of Windows Server 2012 (Essentials, for example)?

Thanks in advance.

This can be done if you format then drive as normal before running the backup wizard on either computer, and then choose option to backup to an existing drive when you set up the backup. If you, instead, choose the option to let WSB manage the drive, it is reformatted and is exclusive to the last machine that configured the drive.

So I can take a 4TB hard drive, partition it into two 2TB partitions (NTFS?), and devote a partition to each Windows 2012 Server?

And the Server installations will understand not to exceed its allotted 2TB capacity?

Yes.

Thanks much!

Can't install ,Net Framework on XP

Can't install ,Net Framework on XP

Hate to bring this up on such an old machine but maybe together, we can make this work. I just tried to install a disc to install the software for an HP Deskjet 2400. The first think I saw was a message saying;
We have detected that Version 3,0 or 3,5 of the ,Net Framework is not yet installed. I went to Windows update and it downloaded the update but IT COULD NOT INSTALL IT. Went on to say to reinstall the disc and finish the installation after updating.
From this I gather that this printer is compatible with XP I just need to figure out a way to instal the update. Any ideas? Thanks

Try running .NET Framework verifier.

http://cid-27e6a35d1a492af7.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Blog%7C_Tools/netfx%7C_setupverifier%7C_new.zip

The .NET Framework setup verification tool supports verifying the following products:
.NET Framework 1.0
.NET Framework 1.1
.NET Framework 1.1 SP1
.NET Framework 2.0
.NET Framework 2.0 SP1
.NET Framework 2.0 SP2
.NET Framework 3.0
.NET Framework 3.0 SP1
.NET Framework 3.0 SP2
.NET Framework 3.5
.NET Framework 3.5 SP1
.NET Framework 4 Client
.NET Framework 4 Full
.NET Framework 4.5

See if .NET Framework verifier can fix what is installed and allow you then to update .NET via Windows Update (may not work).

If you cannot get .NET Framework running, you may need to run SFC /SCANNOW from an admin command prompt. For XP you will need the XP Setup DVD.

1] Download the full installer from Microsoft (Here)

2] Turn off your antivirus during before install

3] Install .Net 3.5

4] If fails, try running the Framework Verifier as per earlier suggestion (Can try that straight of the bat too)

5] If no luck, locate the installation error in your windows event logs (Control Panel, Event Viewer) and update your post here.

If the .Net Framework Verifier does not work you may need to remove .Net installations.

Try as per normal through Control Panel or use the Aaron Stebner .Net Framework Cleanup Tool from http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx

running sfc can help here : http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

verify also event viewer - look for errors

Sorry for delay.
Looked at Event Viewer and going back to 10/19/13, I see error 1023 and 10005 for MsInstaller on a two or three times a day basis. I attempted to load the Full installer but it crashed and said it could not install. In looking at Add/Remove programs, the only listing I see that relates to this is;
Microsoft.Net Framework 1.1
Microsoft.Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1
I will now try to run the .NET Framework verifier but don’t feel very optimistic that it’s going to solve the problem. Since I still have the original installation disc, should I try re-installing the entire disc as a new computer? I know I will lose all programs that have been loaded if I do that. Another thought, should I try buying a plain o printer (not the all in one) and see if that will work?
John, I downloaded the zip file you mentioned but I don;t see an executable file in there to run the program. How do I run it?

Server 2012 R2 stuck on "Please wait for the User Profile Service"

Server 2012 R2 stuck on "Please wait for the User Profile Service"

We have ADS with Windows Server 2012 R2 and some other servers with same OS. Today we have restarted this server. It was booted successfully and gave logon screen. I have logged on normally with domain admin account. After that it is stucked and moving windows wait circle and says " Please wait for the User Profile Service".

I have searched and googled for this, also on expert-Exchnge old forums for this. But nothing i got.

Please help.

Please note , this is virtual server created in Hyper-V.

This is often group policy processing. A few things can cause it to stall. Printer driver deployment, software installation via GPO (GPSI) or a login script. If any of these have errors GPclient processing waits for the error to resolve. It will eventually time out (60 minutes is standard) and finish logging in. Then you can look at event logs and address the underlying error.

what happens if you log in with a different user, could be profile specific. for troubleshooting purposes create another user same permissions let us know what happens when you try to logon.

Dear works2011,

I have logged on with another domain admin user, but same thing is happens.

i have now reformatted and recreated domain. Added subnets in Active sites and services. and rebooted server. Now server stuck on same issue" please wait for the user profile service"

what happens if you disconnect the network cable, if there is a DNS issue this will resolve it temporarily and allow you to connect.

It is only for a single PC, Windows 7 is already installed. I do not want to install fresh Windows 7 OS , create an image or modify a *. WIM.
Just want to add Drivers to a already Windows 7 OS installed on a PC.
Is there a directory that i can copy the drivers into, so that when the hardware is installed, Windows OS can find the drivers to install.

Thanks.

I'm not completely sure of the objective conditions here. But I'll take a stab at it:
I would use something like Driver Magician to back up all the drivers on a known system.
Then you can put them in a folder or restore them or .....

Also see: http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Windows/XP/Q_27532542.html

"I need to preload drivers in Windows 7, while the hardware is not installed...So that, once the hardware is installed windows could find the drivers."

Connect to the internet and go to the hardware manufactures website and download and install the drivers.

Note that almost all newly installed hardware will be seen by win. 7 and genetic drivers will be installed automatically.
You can then update the drivers from the hardware manufactures website.
Also some hardware come with a driver install disc.

RE: "is there a directory?"
I believe that any directory will do as you can point to it.
And, if you use Driver Magician or similar program, it will "restore" the drivers it's backed up.

Windows 2012 - RDP error

Windows 2012 - RDP error

Remote users trying to connect to server get the following error:-

Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:-
1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network

Not (1) - I can connect locally
Not (2) - same reason

Where to start looking?

Hi,

When you say you can connect locally, do you mean directly to the console of the server, or from a remote session in the office where you are sitting?

If you have made sure that you have remote access enabled (setting > server info > advanced system settings > remote tab > "allow remote connection to this server" is ticked.

Then check that the users can ping the servername or IP from wherever they are trying to connect from.

Are you using a VPN for the remote users, or should they be able to connect without from anywhere?

Can connect using RDP from local office.

Unfortunately, pretty sure firewall will block ping.

Remote users use vpn.

If you are using VPN, the firewall should not block the ping as it would essentially be an internal connection.

Unless the server is in a DMZ and in that case, you would not be able to ping from your desktop either.

If the VPN is an isolated VLAN, you need to look at your DNS settings on that VLAN and make sure the users can resolve the servername in the case they cannot ping it...

Also you could try telnet over the VPN on port 3389 (RDP) to ensure you can connect to the server .

Ah it seems one server on the subnet works ok (Call is ServerA) (both servers are 2012) but another one (call it ServerB) does not.

Also, user can RDP to ServerA and then RDP from there to ServerB no problem.

BTW - how do you access the remote setting? Looking at the server roles on the working one the Remote Access role is not even installed? Confused.

DCPRMO

DCPRMO

I have a Windows Server 2003 (member server) and need to decommission it from the domain.

QUESTIONS:* How long will the DCPROMO take?
* It is currently providing DHCP, will the DHCP component still function after the DCPROMO?
* Will I have to statically assign DNS on the workstations for internet function?

If it's a member server you don't need to run DCPromo. Just go into the properties on the server itself and remove it from the domain.

DHCP will continue to function, but if you're doing to decommission the server, you should move that service to another server.

Without a DHCP server you'll have to assign static IPs, subnet masks, and default gateways to everything that currently uses DHCP.

If it's a member server then you change domain to workgroup , or just delete it from ad

Approx 20mins but if you decommissing it you don't need to do this as its already a member server
DHCP and DNS will still work

DCPROMO is for Domain Controllers only. Since you state this is only a member server then all you need to do is disjoin it from the domain.

DHCP will not function as the server will no longer be trusted. Why not use your DC for DHCP instead?

So what is the consensus, will DHCP still work after disjoining? What are the steps to disjoin?

Microsoft's DHCP service does not require Active Directory to run - indeed, you don't even need a Microsoft DHCP server to operate a domain-based network,.

Batch File to Replace Text in a Text File

Batch File to Replace Text in a Text File

I have a text file "C:TextOutputLJD.txt" where I want to replace "+-" (without the quotes with) "-" (again, without the quotes)

My only option is to do this within a .bat file without installing any 3rd party software.

+-00000000000000 becomes -00000000000000

Is VBscript an option (works out of the box since WinXP)? Also, is replaceing the "+- " to "-" without any conditions (any location, any occurrence? or are there restrictions, like has to be before numbers, always the first position etc)

Anything "out-of-the-box" within Windows is an option. Lots of security lock-downs in the office and there are no conditions. If "+-" exists, replace with "-". Also, I want to save the same file without creating a new one.

Sadly, I can write a VBscript file for this, but it HAS TO BE created as a new file (after that, of course the old file will be deleted and the new file will be renamed to the original). Is that an option?

As long as I finish with the filename the same as when I started, it's all good. There is another script I do not have control of that will look for this file at a specific time and upload it to an FTP site so keeping the same name at the end is critical.

That's a one-liner in Powershell:

DNS cannot be installed on this domain controller

DNS cannot be installed on this domain controller

We have a new Server 2012R2 machine. Getting an error after trying to promote to domain controller. I've added the roles of Active Directory Sites and Services, AD users and computers, AD domains and trusts and DNS. But I get the error, "DNS cannot be installed on this domain controller because this domain does not host DNS." We absolutely use DNS on our domain. But this halts the install and I can't go any further in the server promotion. I've researched this and I haven't found a situation that matches ours exactly. Some say to run dcpromo from a cmd prompt but that has gone away in 2012R2. We only have one other DC it is a Windows Server 2008 Standard machine. I have verified that it has the DNS role.

Yes I have. I tried the commands listed. They didn't help.

Could you provide the output for a DCDIAG?

I would check to make sure you can reach the extant DCs from this new machine. It may be there's a networking/firewall issue that's preventing this new DC from contacting DNS.

Adding a new user in SQL Server

Hello,

I need a new user in SQL that has full access to an existing database and the required tables. I would need Mixed Mode turned on so I can use something other than Windows Authentication. I appreciate your help.

I have SQL Server 2008.

Thank,

if you have mied mode enabled on your database , choose windows authentication and put the domain account (or click search and find the user )
once you have the user, click on user mapping from the left pane and choose the database you want to give full permission (set the default schema usually dbo. and on bottom pane choose db_owner ) ..

THANKS!

Two question...

How does it distinguish from windows authentication and SQL if I add a AD account which is windows form of authentication?

I added a AD account is that ok?

for Windows authentication, you don't need to enter the password, for sql authentication, you need to have a password. also there is a check button when you create the logins

You can accomplish this using powershell. There is already someone that has created something like this. See the below link for the script download and instructions.

Problem with Windows Server Backup

Problem with Windows Server Backup

I have a new client with a Windows Server Standard (2008) SP2 (not R2).

The backup has failed with various error numbers, and I have done some reconfiguring. It turns out the USB drives that were being used were not big enough. I added a 2TB USB drive to the backup.

I've noticed that if I run the "Backup Once" wizard, no USB drive is available to be selected as the destination. They simply aren't in the list.

I remoted in to another client (I think they're R2) to check theirs, and in the Backup Once wizard, their USB backup drive *is* in the list.

Anyone know what could be going on here?

Thanks.
Dave

Hi Dave. Is the drive formatted in Windows Disk Management?
Got to Windows Disk Management and delete existing partition from it. But first copy out the data from the drive.
After that start Windows Server Backup and try to backup it again.
If it is a USB3.0 drive make sure it has a proper driver installed.

Windows built-in backup needs 512 byte sector disks, while newer disks, particularly large ones, use 4096 byte sectors and those disks are therefore not compatible with windows server backup. You will either need to get disks with 512 byte sectors, or change to a backup utility that supports the newer disks, like Paragon's backup software.

Yes, I discovered that Windows Backup on Server 2008 Standard (not R2) recognizes disk sizes up to 1 TB.

Changing Default Office Templates for all users (including ones not yet

Changing Default Office Templates for all users (including ones not yet created)

We need to change the default template for Word 2010 for our users to enable them to use a standard company template going forward. However, all the information I can find relates to changing the files in the AppdataRoamingMicrosoftTemplates folder. This is fine for current users, but a lot of our machines are used by different people and it also would significantly slow down our new build process. Is there any way to change the Default template within Office so it will always use our template instead of the standard supplied office one?

Hello
Have you to tried to do it via group policy?

In Word, the default template is always the Normal template. It cannot be shared. So if it is on a server, each user would need to have his or her own copy in a non-public folder.

Also remember that if it cannot be found, Word will create a new one from scratch, so any modifications will be lost.

I wasn't planning on sharing it on a server - i was more thinking of replacing the default normal.dot with our customised one within the Office set files; so whenever we create a new user on a machine and they startup office (word), office will copy the customised normal.dot files to the templates folder instead of the standard ones, which us having to then replace them

I can't see any way of making Word do that, even with VBA. If Word is running, it will be using the Normal template, so it would have to be done by something external to Word while Word is stopped.

GPO seems the way to go, but I don't have any admin experience and it looks like a steep learning curve.

Adding a dropdown Box to windows Forms Using Visual Basic

Adding a dropdown Box to windows Forms Using Visual Basic

Hello Team
I see that windows forms does not have a dropdown box option. Has anyone found a way around this were I would be able to add a dropdown box to select one item for filtering "purposes"

If you mean by dropdown box that you don't want to see the editable part of a ComboBox, just set its DropDownStyle property to DropDownList. That will disable the edit box and just show the list, sort of like a select element in html.

NTP Settings for Windows 2008 domain environment

NTP Settings for Windows 2008 domain environment

Where should l look for NTP settings for my domain environment ? Is it in PDC Emulator registry file. I cant find the proper settings.

You can verify here
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32TimeParameters

Checking

You can check the registry entries if the domain controller is using NTP (should be on PDC) or NT5DS (on non-PDC):
Find the value of Type under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32TimeParameters
You can also check for time advertisement on the PDC by running this command w32tm.exe /resync /rediscover /no_wait, then check for Event ID 139
To check the source time server: w32tm /query /status

from:http://blogs.technet.com/b/nepapfe/archive/2013/03/01/it-s-simple-time-configuration-in-active-directory.aspx

Hmmm ... W32time, the timekeeping service in Windows. I experienced enough trouble with that piece of crap when in NTP mode to avoid using it whenever I can. And it's a pain to configure and troubleshoot.

My recommendation:
Use a Windows port of the classic *ix NTP service, sync a master (or two, three) with an external source (i.e. from pool.ntp.org) and sync the clients and DCs to the master. The NTP service software is free. Easy to install and configure, works like a charm and is stable as a rock. And it is nicer when it comes to one of the rare cases of troubleshooting.

See this article for the "How To".

The NTP service has a low ressource footprint, therefore the NTP functionality could be hooked onto existing machines or VM's like webservers, ftp servers, mailservers or database hosts - even in a DMZ - without visible performance impact.

Visual Source Safe 2005 on Windows Server 2012 R2

Visual Source Safe 2005 on Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi there,

We have been tasked with getting rid of all of our Windows Server 2003 servers since support for 2003 will soon end. We currently have a Windows Server 2003 VM that hosts VSS 2005. Instead of going to Windows Server 2008, we want to go right to Windows Server 2012 to replace this 2003 VM. With that, can we configure VSS 2005 to work with Windows Server 2012? If so, what is required and what additional installations do we need to do in order to get it working properly?

Thanks and please ask any questions you may have!

- Christian

It should just work. There is no real VSS server component, so all is based on file sharing, and the VSS application logic is run on the client. There is one server component (Visual SourceSafe LAN Service, SSService.exe) which runs as a service on the server, which provides faster access when using Visual Studio - and that should work the same.
I didn't try, but I see no reason that it does not work. We use VSS 2005 on W2008R2 (64bit, of course), and there are no issues.

Didn't you think about switching the source safe platform? Subversion or Git is much better than the old VSS.

Likewise it should work out on 2012 r2 but probably you need to check the SSL based connection as 2012r2 has more stringent crypto (e.g. sslv3 and below disabled, TLS 1.2 is enabled by default) and likely your need to re-issue your ssl server cert in IIS running - https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/library/ms181053(v=vs.80).aspx
regardless, I do not see it as showstopper, and I believe it should be working with latest .net framework installed too. I have not tried though

Hi all;

Thanks very much for the replies! I am hoping VSS will work just fine with 2012 R2. Does anyone have a great tutorial for how to properly install VSS? I want to ensure I follow all of the required steps.

Thanks,
- Christian

The closest and official is likely only in MSDN on 2 core steps (though it stated 2K3)
Installing Visual SourceSafe > https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/b8e72409(v=vs.80).aspx
Adding and Configuring a Database > https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181056(v=vs.80).aspx

But really i dont think that can be found and even then it is not supported per se. MS already stated the next successor is Visual Studio 2010, and no longer distributes Visual SourceSafe. MS offers Team Foundation Server Basic for smaller development teams. Understand there may be a hotfix so existing SourceSafe customers can use SourceSafe with Visual Studio 2010. The latter support Windows 2012 R2. And probably there is something to explore instead. http://alinconstantin.blogspot.sg/2013/11/using-visual-sourcesafe-2005-with.html

But do note the final version of VSS 2005, retired from mainstream support on 10 July 2012 - extended support ending on 11 July 2017...https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa302175.aspx

Unmountable Boot Volume

Unmountable Boot Volume

Hi,

I have a dual boot XPS laptop with ubuntu and windows 7. After some windows updates the laptop does not load in windows. We try all sort of options:
- Safe mode crashes
- Last good known configuration the same
- Repair from cd the same
- Load with boot cd rescus in a linux environment - partition gets to 50% and gives error
- Connect with enclosure the disk and still partition not visible to get the data

We need a way to get it and get the data at least. Any suggestions?

This is the error we get on blue screen when we load windows partition

Unmountable Boot Volume

i would hook the disk to a working system, or boot from a live cd
then copy the data
if however you keep getting the "unmountable boot volume" error, i suggest to run the disk manufacturers diag on it -and if it comes back clean, chkdsk
you find all the diags on the uBCD :Hardware diagnostic CD UBCD

go to the download page, scroll down to the mirror section, and click on a mirror to start the download
Download the UBCD and make the cd <<==on a WORKING PC, and boot the problem PC from it
Here 2 links, one to the general site, and a direct link to the download

since the downloaded file is an ISO file, eg ubcd527.iso - so you need to use an ISO burning tool
if you don't have that software, install cdburnerXP : http://cdburnerxp.se/

If you want also the Ram tested - run memtest86+ at least 1 full pass, - you should have NO errors!

For disk Diagnostics run the disk diag for your disk brand (eg seagate diag for seagate drive) from the HDD section - long or advanced diag ! (runs at least for30 minutes)

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ ultimate boot cd
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html download page

** you can make a bootable cd - or bootable usb stick

Interruption during application of update? Or is this an issue during the first boot after the update?
if you can boot the system into Ubuntu, you should be able to get the data off.

Boot off the DVD into repair console, and run chkdsk on the harddisk. Possible badblocks could cause this issue.
You should consider getting a new HD and clone the one you have.

yes this is the issue after the update. i try to run in boot cd and windows cd repair mode and i can not get to command to do this. i was ware of this fix but seems there is not way to get there.

I could clone if this is an option that help me get the data. any good cloning software to work with?

Boot a linux CD and use ddrescue and save to an external drive. Then use GetDataBack for NTFS to get back your files from the windows partition. You can run GetDataBack on the image file.

Im guessing your harddrive might have a problem (defective sectors for example, and that therefore the system cant be bootet up after update as some files didnt got updated properly and/or filsystem gots damaged)

The imaging process will give you informations if there were defective blocks of the HHD while imaging.

Usually the media that comes with the new disk are good. Ubuntu liveCd and using DD if=/dev/sd(current drive) of=/dev/sd(newdrive) bs=512. Though this can take some time depending on the size of the original.

When booting from the DVD, one of the trait option is the console, that is where you need to be to run chkdsk. The other option is to pull the laptop HD and attach it to a desktop via USB or another hot (while the desktop is powered up) and run chkdsk that way.

Once the system boots, several HD vendor provide a tool such acronis disk image LE limited to the MMFgs drive being one of the HD SRC/clone dst. I believe most manufacturer of HDs SSDs include software dealing with getting/cloning the source onto their storage.

Easyus backup is one as well. There are several other

Terminal Server licencing

Terminal Server licencing

Dear All,

I have a Windows 2003 server installed and configured with terminal server role. This server providing also the administration as terminal server client licensing. I bought lincence for Terminal server 2003 and terminal server 2008 and they are both device CAL-s.
I have never used / installed (i beleive) TS 2008 cals before.
My question is: Is that possible to use TS 2008 device CALs on a Microsoft Server 2003 machine?

Thanks

Yes, but you have to call Microsoft to get the appropriate CAL keys for 2003. (Honestly, not sure they will still do it since 2003 is about to end life. (Probably will, but you REALLY need to upgrade!)

i have the licence papers with the keys. Is that what you meant?

Yes - you call MS - you cannot install keys for 2008 on a 2003 server. You Microsoft to provide you alternate keys.

Windows File Folder Permission

Windows File Folder Permission

Hi,

I have old windows server 2003 with dc, users, groups and data with file folder permission.

There are huge data with many folders, subfolder with having very different different permission.

Due to old hardware we had purchased new server with windows 2012 rs.
I have manual way to transfer all this to new server is create all users, define them in group, and assign permission on each folder, subfolder as per old server.

This is very time consuming and irritating.

Is there any way to transfer all users, group, data with all existing file folder permission?

please suggest.

robocopy the files over with the /copy:dats property i.e.

I would use robocopy to synchronize the files between the old server and the new one.

Here is a step-by-step article for doing a migration:

Through this robocopy will folder and subfolder will get copy?

But how to transfer users and group from windows 2003 server to 2012 r2 server.

yes with the /s or the /e parameter, join the s2K12 machine to the domain, or make it a domain controller.

What you are asking for is 2 very different things.

1. In order to "transfer" your users and groups, you need to deploy an additional domain controller into your Active Directory infrastructure. Install the DNS service on the new server, then run DCPROMO.

2. using robocopy will solve the second issue of moving the files and folders with NTFS permissions.

Fix EXIF info on photos rotated in Windows explorer

Fix EXIF info on photos rotated in Windows explorer

HI there, need some quick help.

I've rotated a bunch of photos using Windows 7 explorer (selecting the thumbnails and right-clicking rotate).

A bug here means the EXIF info is not updated right, so the images now show wrong in other programs (eg ipad)

Is there a quick way to fix this (eg 15 mins from reading a working answer)? eg a dos command to bulk update the EXIF info. Several dozen to correct so not a huge one, but if there's a way i can maybe use it as a workaround next time too.

Or do i need to edit them all manually. If so what is the quickest way to do this? I don't mind doing it on ipad, android, or windows, but reluctant to upload to a cloud just yet.

Thanks

PS the "quick" way should be automatic, ie the method derives the correct photo orientation based on how the picture shows in Windows explorer thumbnail view. I should not have to specify the correct orientation for each photo (i had already done this in windows explorer)

Can you post up one photo that has the problem so I can see the EXIF data and how it has been rotated?

~bp

hi Bill, thanks for your response. See attached example jpg which is showing correctly as a thumbnail in Windows 7, but not so in many apps, shown rotated 90 degrees, eg as in example shown in this doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1WqYJcmnBaLg2l-amsqfP78bRRn2tLwt-w5P-4_GfWg4

Thanks

Hmmm, that's a little odd, I downloaded the image you posted here to Windows, and the icon, preview, and viewer all show it "wrong" in portrait orientation in Explorer.

In the Windows viewer I had to rotate it 90 degrees, and it updated the file as expected, but I think it does more than just change some EXIF, I think it recodes and rewrites the image file.

~bp

I also downloaded it (to a new location) and the thumbnail is showing correctly in Windows, but is wrong when opened. So the bug is preserved in passing the image through this webpage.

So I still need an answer.

Thanks

Printer, IE, and Windows Performance problem on 2 domain computers

Printer, IE, and Windows Performance problem on 2 domain computers

I asked this question on another help forum and had a lot of input but nothing seemed to work, so I'm hoping the Experts Exchange community can help me out, below is the info:Sorry I know the title is a little vague.

I have 2 domain computers with identical problems, but keep in my the other 20 computers on the domain are working fine so its likely not on the networking or server end of things. The domain/network is controller by 2008 SBS

The problems are as follows:

Search functions (in the start menu) would take 30 seconds or more to produce anything
Printing from any application would take 30 seconds or more and lock up the application for that designated time
Internet Explorer takes 30 seconds to start the application (not load a web page) (other browsers do not have this problem)
Right clicking any file or folder takes 30 seconds
Bringing up a printer's properties takes 30 seconds or more.
launching any application that is directly correlated with Windows takes 30+? seconds to load (CMD, Event Viewer, all MMS, etc. )

Here is what I've tried:
Ran 8 different AV/Malware scanners just to rule out a virus infection, These computers are clean.
Ran Disk cleanup
Ran CHKDSK /b
Ran ccleaner
Ran Sfc /scannow
Uninstalled IE 11 and installed IE 10 (to try and fix the IE problems)
Uninstalled the Virus protection (Vipre)
Turned off the Print Spooler just to see if IE would load faster.
Uninstalled and reinstalled all the printers. (Yes even tried clearing out the SPOOL folder)
Tried a System Restore on both computer about a week before the reported problems

Performance Monitors are fine and system resources are great
Both computers have 3.4GHZ Core i5 processors and 6GB of RAM.

I suspected a corruption in Windows due to all the problems and failed fixes.

I've had to repair corrupt windows installations before so on both computers I finally 'gave up' and ran a Windows 7 reinstall, here is an article in case you were wondering what that entails.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/243190/how_to_repair_a_corrupt_windows_7_installation.html

So here are the results after running the repair and reinstalling the first batch of 170 updates and updating IE to version 10:
Computer 1: Everything works great except the printers are still exhibiting the same delay and locking up applications (Yes I've tried reinstalling all printers, even cleared out the SPOOL folder and reinstalled, same problem)

(Also made sure all drivers were up to date for each printer)

(Also setup all the printers with an IP connection rather than through the Server Printer Shares- Problem still exists)

(Also tried removing all printers except the USB connected printer - Problem still exists) - Tried using just one network printer too and removing the USB printer - Problem still exists.

Computer 2: Nothing is fixed. all of the problems are still there.

I really do not want to do a fresh install on Computer 2 due to the large amount of applications this guy uses (15 or more) and each application has settings/configurations that would have to be transferred.- But I'm getting the feeling that a Fresh install may be my only option -

As for computer 1, I'm stumped.

Thanks again for any an all input.

Well Everyone I figured it out.. I dunno why I didn't think to do this before and also I'm a bit surprised that it worked, (also its my Birthday today so that might have something to do with it, ha ha).

I compared 2 working computers with the 2 problematic computers and decided that I would uninstall any C+?+? , .Net, or programs that were unneeded and weren't on the 2 computers that were working. I would reboot after each removal so that I could pinpoint which one it was. I started with C+?+? since I know it is integrated into many applications, drivers, services, etc.

Long story short the 2nd thing I removed was : C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.30729.6161 ... as soon as I removed it and rebooted, everything started working great. And to add to the success, there was a new application on one of the these computers called Ecopy PDF Pro 6.2 that would error and fail to start, and removing that C++ Version worked for that as well.

Score 1 for the IT guys!

Look in Devices and Printers, click on a printer to get the Printer Server Properties. Look in the Drivers tab to see if there are extra or conflicting drivers. You may wish to first uninstall the printer on Computer 1 and then check / remove drivers. After this, restart and install the printer fresh.

My initial post states that I completely removed the SPOOL folder in Windows which removes all printers and drivers. When I re-added the printers I made sure to load only the most recent Drivers

I saw that. I am asking you to look in the Drivers tab and remove extra / superfluous drivers. Removing the SPOOL folder does not delete printer drivers.

Yes all extra drivers were removed.

Made sure only the most recent drivers were on the printer server as well.

Re-initialize 3GB HDD in server 2012

Re-initialize 3GB HDD in server 2012

Hi

I installed a new 3gb HDD in my 2012 server. When it was initialising I said do as MBR but then I can only use 2gb.

How can I get disk manager to re-initialize and ask me first question again?

Thanks Terry

First, delete all the partitions on the disk (destroying your data).

Then, once you have an empty disk, you can right click on left hand column where it says "Disk X Basic 3TB Online", and click "Convert to GPT". That will wipe out the partition table and set it up as a GPT instead of MBR.

Windows 7 Clipboard buffer

Windows 7 Clipboard buffer

hello,
I would like to increase the buffer size of the windows' 7 clipboard. I searched the internet and found that I can do this via the "system menu." I have not been able to find the "system menu."
So, my question is; how can i increase the buffer size?
I need to increase the size because I use two monitors (extending). It is not that I need to capture the entire two monitors. The work around is to disable the second monitor, but this is too much work/steps in order for the Clipboard to capture the image.

I know that there are third party clipboards, but I rather use the Windows' app.

I have 4 monitors and they all fit into one screenshot. No problem there.

Do you get error messages when pressing printscreen or when pasting into eg paint?

I've seen this page:
http://www.ehow.com/how_7808949_increase-size-clipboard.html

Another way of getting to the system menu besides typing sysdm.cpl as mentioned on the page above is to go to Control Panel and click on the item in the list of Control Panel parts called "System".

Or you could just right click "Computer" and select "Properties".

have you tried in built utilities - SnippingTool.exe or psr.exe?

ola_erik, wow, when I "shft-Print Screen" there is a small pop-up box at the bottom of the main monitor that indicates it has not captured any screen, and obviously if I try to paste the capture, there is nothing there.
To all others, let me check on what you wrote.

SCCM 2012 not pulling Windows 2012 WSUS updates

Recently, I have added both Windows 2012 and Windows 2012 R2 into our existing Automatic Deployment rules in SCCM however, if I right click All Software Updates and run Synchronize Software Updates and monitor wsyncmgr.log file the requested categories are not listing Windows 2012 or Windows 2012 R2. See here:

You have to change that in SCCM in the server roles area of the admin section. Otherwise SCCM will go back and "fix" what you are breaking in WSUS.

no same thing says Microsoft excel has stopped working

Did you actually uninstall it and then reinstall, or did you just reinstall? You should do the former.

If you know approximately when this started happening you may be able to go back to a Checkpoint and restore the working version.

I uninstalled and reinstalled. and has happened ever since office 2010 was first installed.

Moving folders from Favorite Liabrary to Documents

Moving folders from Favorite Liabrary to Documents

Hi, I have a couple of folders that are in my Favorite Library i.e., Downloads and Dropbox. What can I do to move them to My Documents Folder? Is it Possible?
Thanks

Look in Documents with Windows Explorer. The files are probably already there. Libraries are just symbolic links to real folders. I think you will find your files there and no need to move.

John
The first pic is the way My Documents folder looks like. Note that the folder I want are on the left column under Favorites and not in My Documents folder. The second pic shows what it looks like when I use Windows Exlorer.
..

Favourites are just pointers. There is nothing there. The folders are already sitting under Computer. DropBox is in the System Tray. Look in Computer under Desktop and you will see everything there except DropBox (which is a service running).

I just ignore Favourites in Windows Explorer. Favourites are not used in xPlorer2.

In any event, there is nothing to move (certainly not in my system).

favorites are simply links to a location.. they work the same as internet explorer favorites.. what you need to do is move the actual location to the documents folder. For downloads you go into its properties / location and change the location. With dropbox it will be a setting in the dropbox settings if you are syncing your documents to dropbox and add the dropbox local location to your documents you will be creating a circular reference and can cause problems

Finally got it figured out. Thanks for your help

Windows 8 Booting to Black Screen

Windows 8 Booting to Black Screen

I have not used my custom built computer for a few months due to moving. Before I moved it was working fine. I finally got the time to hook it up but when I turned it on, it was going very slow. The blue Windows 8 logo came up with the spinning bubbles at the bottom. I waited for about 10 min and it finally loaded the desk top background and very slowly loaded the desktop and programs. I restarted the computer and sense then the same the same thing happens but after the Windows 8 boot screen, the computer just goes to black. I am able to boot into Ubuntu, on the same computer, just fine and access the Windows 8 partition. Is there any way to fix this problem? I rather not have to reload windows :-(

Are you loading Ubuntu from the hard drive? or from a DVD. I have seen drives fail from months of inactivity. It is also possible, if the hard drive was causing an issue, that it further corrupted the operating system.

I can leave a virtual machine for months or even a year and it will always start correctly. Time does not matter.

So I think your machine had a hardware issue.

Ubuntu is on the same SSD as the Windows 8 partition. Furthermore all hardware tests come back with noting wrong and I can freely access the Windows 8 partition from within Ubuntu with out any problems.

Restart it and watch the disk LED (if present) while the screen is black - is there any disk activity? Leave it on like this at least for minutes.

There is disk activity, a lot of it. The disk light is on non-stop the entire time.

If it was a physical disk I'd say defrag it, but since you said it is on an SSD that is not applicable.

Check under the hood and make sure all the connections are tight. Remove and reseat the memory. I would also try safe mode and see if that makes it any better. Could be a damaged or corrupt file somewhere.

DHCP Server - Windows Server 2012, Router, or both?

DHCP Server - Windows Server 2012, Router, or both?

Hi all,

I'm building a home lab with a Windows Server 2012 and an Asus router. From the research I've done, it seems i should let the Server handle the DHCP role, and turn off DHCP on the router.

But what if I want people access to our network w/o joining the domain. For example - I'd like people to join the wireless network and be able to surf the internet. Or maybe allow access to a server folder w/o joining the domain.

How should I handle this? Do I enable DHCP Server roles on both the Server and the Router, with each handling a different pool of addressed?

Thank in advance.

You can still do this by using the Windows Server only, no special setup required,

You can still do this by using the Windows Server only, no special setup required,

If the point of the lab is to replicate a real world environment, I'd argue that most businesses don't want untrusted/unmanaged devices having access to the same LAN as their trusted devices. They segment them into a separate LAN (much like a DMZ or guest network) and have a firewall only allowing necessary traffic to specific resources. In such a setup, that segment would have its own DHCP server. This is easy to reproduce with Hyper-V, VLANs, and a small linux VM doing DHCP duties.

So Windows Server will automatically hand out IP addresses to dumb devices like printers? I just plug in a printer and the Server handles it?

Guests who log onto our wireless network w/o joining our domain (not even being aware of the Server) will be given IP addresses by the Server as well?

DHCP is a broadcast protocol so, by default, there is no difference between a domain joined machine and a printer. Yes, they will get IP addresses. *HOWEVER* each user or device legally still requires a CAL. The setup I proposed above kills two birds with one stone. It is more secure and helps ensure you stay legal.

Ok - thank you. Yes, I'm good with the CALs and such.

Folks,
I have looked everywhere for this solution. I'm using Windows 7 and I would like to create some "blank folders" that I would rename. The reason for this is I would like to consolidate into different folders programs that are not in their own folder, as seen below.

Right-click on "all programs" choose "open" then create your folders there.

WSUS clients wuauclt

WSUS clients wuauclt

Hi Experts,

I'm implementing WSUS in my network. Everything seem to work fine.

I need a way to let the clients detect the available updates on the WSUS server. I know it can be done with the command wuauclt.exe /detectnow. What would be a good way to push this command from a remote pc to all the clients in the netwerk?

Anyone knows wat the other wuauclt switches do? /resetauthorization and /reportnow?

The switches are documented here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc708617%28v=ws.10%29.aspx and https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc720477(WS.10) (if you would want to call that documentation, Microsoft).

To provoke network wide detection, use this nice AD addon for free: specops gpupdate

They do that by default on their own every 22 hours(Can be modified). You can schedule updates to be installed at specific times using group policies.

Use a group policy as the above poster says this is best practice.

Also some other tips.

1. Use a test group of PCs, be careful deploying updates to all computers ive seen instances of machines not coming back up amongst other things.
2. Avoid the first releases of updates take your time installing them unless the need is critical. First releases are always the buggy ones let some other guys PC's crash rather than yours.

Thanks, i configured the gpo;

Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update -> Automatic Updates detection frequency

The computers contact wsus every 22 hours by default and also each time they start.
So if you needed a solution on how to manually invoke additional detections (it sounded like this, because If you didn't look for this, you wouldn't need to do anything ). I provided the way. Also you asked for documentation of the wuauclt switches and I provided that also. But the points go to the others. Can you explain, please?

Yes, you may find some files are locked because there's a running program which is using the file as a temporary measure but there's nothing in there that will damage your system if removed.

I have malware on my computer (not sure if that is the correct terminology) that is not allowing me to change my proxie settings. All of my internet browsers (chrome, IE, firefox) will not go online because of a "Proxy issue" When I go in and change the Proxy settings, it atomatically switches back. Outlook works just fine, just the browsers that don't.

I have run a McCafee full computer scan, also a scan using "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware". Neither could find the problem.

Any ideas? THanks!

Hi,

most of antivirus programms don`t find this malware/trojaner. Have a look for "adwcleaner von xplode", this tool works great for malware.
No installation, just run exe file. I use it once a month to check the systems.
Be aware to use a safe side for download this tool.

check also the all startup software with msconfig, unmark all you can not indentify,

Regards Ronald

Thanks! I found something called AdwCleaner 3.311

Is that the correct program to run? I appreciate your help!

i have a newer version 4.001, but your version would help as well

Thanks Ronard... found the 4.001 version and am running it now. Hope it works!!! Thanks for the help so far.

It is currently running the scan. It has been stuck for the past 30 min. It is in "Analyzing Browsers", almost to the end. Literally hasn't moved in over 30 min. Should I be concerned?

Windows 7 Not Boot

Windows 7 Not Boot

Hi,

After a clone from one disk to another when boot windows 7 I had to run the repair boot. Was to start normally, but after connecting a second hard left to start again. I Startup Repair again but still does not boot. However if i have the windows 7 cd in the drive it reads the CD and then boot to the disc normally, so I assume it has something to do with the boot. There will be some utility to repair the boot in this case since the reparation of the boot in windows does not work?

Have you checked the boot order and set the original hard drive back at the first boot device (after the DVD)?
