sorting files in windows 7 using explorer

sorting files in windows 7 using explorer

I have files in Windows 7 with names like
tweets_31-12-10_16-00-01.csv
the 3 is the month, 12 the day, and 10 is 2010.
I have about 600 of them and I want to sort them in explorer from earliest to latest.

Does anyone have an idea about that?

tweets_31-12-10_16-00-01.csv the 3 is the month

For 31, if 3 is month, what is 1?

Thanks. Sorry, I meant that 31 is the day and 12 is the month.

I don't know if it's possible to sort them in Windows Explorer. But, another way is to sort the names into a .txt or .csv file, which you can view or print later.

That's why I always use the YYYY-MM-DD format because it sorts properly. Anything starting with the day will never sort properly. This is what it should look like:
tweets_2010-12-31_16-00-01.csv

I suggest you write a program that copies all the files to a new directory (so you don't lose any in the process) and convert the files names in the process. Then it will be very easy to sort the new files names.

I am not proficient in writing that script but also the total size is about 300 gb

I would suggest you disable shadow copies before you start your backup.

A snapshot of the volume might occur during the course of your backup which will cause the vss writer to go crazy.

Are you using any other backup tool on this server which could be using VSS as well?
Does it work if you schedule the backup for different time?

I think I know the problem, I just don't know how to fix it. I found this in disk management. I have mirrored drives and this is what it says : Failed Redundancy ( System, Boot, Page file, Crash Dump). So I tried to reactivate the volumes and I get a Pop-up box saying "The Plex is missing"

Here is the way to fix your failed redundancy :http://www.ehow.com/how_7486824_rebuild-raid-1-software.html

also you might want to ensure your backup either occurs when no other backups are shceduled, or that volume shadow copies are disabled when you are running your backup.

How to automatically log out of Windows 8 after 20 minutes of

How to automatically log out of Windows 8 after 20 minutes of inactivity?

I would like to create a script or use system services to automatically log any one that is logged in - out - after 20 minutes of inactivity. Remote users forget to log out therefore an automated log out after 20 minutes is needed.

There used to be the Microsoft screensaver "winexit" - does that thing maybe still work on 8?
If not, create a scheduled task that runs after 20 minutes of idleness and uses qwinsta.exe to end sessions.

Winexit does not seem to exits in Windows 8.
What are the steps to created a scheduled task to logout after 20 minutes of idleness?

For a winexit derivative, look at http://www.grimadmin.com/staticpages/index.php/ss-operations
About the task: open scheduler,
set the name to autologoff
set the executing account to system
set the trigger to "on idle"
on the "conditions" tab, change the idle time to 20 mins
set the action to be a script. That script would use qwinsta to list sessions and rwinsta to close the listed sessions. I would need some minutes to write it, so try the grimadmin one, first.

The first script here would do: http://www.nooblet.org/blog/2014/logoff-disconnected-users-via-batch-file/

Thank you. There would only be one user, the same username logged in at any given time. Would qwinsta and rwinsta therefore be needed in this case?

Windows Server 2008 (Standard) Server Keyboard Drops Repeatedly

Windows Server 2008 (Standard) Server Keyboard Drops Repeatedly

We have a server running Windows Server 2008 Standard attached to a KVM (it runs our Polaris ILS system). For a reason as yet undiscovered by me, the keyboard sporadically cuts out. The mouse still works during these disruptions and both it & the keyboard work normally with the other servers on the KVM.

We've attempted to plug the server into another port on the KVM and attach a keyboard & mouse to it directly. No luck with either of those potential fixes. The keyboard will pick up after a reboot, but, inevitably, it will stop working again. I see no pattern in the amount of time it works before failing.

Is your KVM using PS2 ports or USB ports? It could be that if you are using PS2 ports that the keyboard port is going bad on the server.

Is your KVM using PS2 ports or USB ports? It could be that if you are using PS2 ports that the keyboard port is going bad on the server.

The KVM uses PS2.

The keyboard & mouse we plugged directly into the server was USB, though. The problem persisted when we did that; the mouse was fine, but the keyboard was totally unresponsive.

We had a similar problem that we cured by adding more memory. We installed several virtual servers and the I/O caused memory shortages even though the single server by itself looked like it had enough.

Interesting. This server isn't one I manage, but I was asked about the keyboard issue. I'll pass that along to the lady who manages it.

Bill - looks like you're correct. When I told her about the possibility of it being linked to RAM, she said she was running low on that server. That makes total sense because a reboot fixes it every time. We're in the process of migrating to virtual servers on new equipment. Hopefully we can finish up that project soon and get rid of this box.

Mail-Enabled public folder (or distribution group) as default sender

Mail-Enabled public folder (or distribution group) as default sender address for user.

Hi,

I am looking for a way to set a different default address for a group of users using Exchange 2010 & Outlook 2010, that the one set in their account. Basically the users have to send email as sales@ which currently comes back in to a mail-enabled public folder. This bit isn't a problem, it's just permissions, but what is the problem is having the sales@ to be their default from and/or reply-to address rather than their own, so instead of having to remember to set the from account when the send as sales, they would have to make a specific effort to send as themselves.

If the email address was added to their account, it would be easy, but we are talking about multiple users, so that won't work. Best answer I can come up so far is some sort of transport or rule that would change headers on all external-bound emails from those people, but that is messy unless I can use a group to manage who it applies to.

Any other suggestions welcome.

You cannot do this at the mailbox level.
And to be honest, I wouldn't want to, as it means the users cannot communicate internally.

You need a header rewriting tool, so that users send the email to an external person as normal, but before it leaves the header is changed. Cannot be done natively without an Edge server, so unless you have one of those (and if you don't, I wouldn't deploy one for this task alone), look at a third party tool to do it for you.

Simon.

AVG blocking mapping of drives

AVG blocking mapping of drives

I have a setup in which I have a couple of workstations that I don't have them joined to the Windows 2012 domain. I still need to map some drives to those servers so when I run;
net use I: \SVR1Install$ /user:administrator password
I get an error saying that it can't be found nor does it log that account in. If I disable the AVG 2013, then everything works just fine.

What do I need to do to allow a drive map without AVG blocking it? I'm thinking I need to allow the program NET.exe ? Or is there more to this?

Windows server 2012 license upgrade

Windows server 2012 license upgrade

I could not upgrade license on Server 2012 with DC, DNS, file, print and fax services.
I added Hyper V and created 2012 eval virtual machine on same server and transfer all roles and remove ADDS out of main host and rejoin it to domain.
I had some issues unjoining and joining it back to domain as I used second NIC for virtual switch and IP on both NIC was active, once from physical NIC and one from virtual NIC that was used in guest HV which is DC now.
It finally worked though users had issue getting file and printers, therefore, I had to map all of them manually. I tried easier fix first by adding second A record on DNS for host server using IP of second NIC but that really did not help to map with name, therefore, I used second NIC ip address to map them all back manually.
It could have been better if I had teamed NIC or used the same NIC, but I did not wanted to take a risk on teaming on a DC that was already running with one IP and ended up using second card for HV switch.

Once I apply the license I will put all role back to main server and decommission VM. Is there any advise on NIC situation to avoid same issues when old DC gets decommissioned?

Go to the Hyper-V virtual switch properties which connect to DC and remove "allow management network to share this network adapter"

This will ensure that Host server will remain with single IP and you can use host server NetBIOS for mapping network drives
Also correct the physical host server Host(A) records in VM DC

Now no need to create another virtual switch for 2nd NIC, if you have created it, remove it and try to connect to physical server from 2nd NIC IP directly, it will work

use DC IP as preferred DNS on Hyper-V host and keep DC VM automatic start action to "always start this virtual machine automatically"

need to monitor pc's with either internet or VPN disconnections

need to monitor pc's with either internet or VPN disconnections

hi, I have a remote site that keeps reporting RDP and outlook disconnects. my main problem is the user never contacts me when it happens, so I can't run tests remotely or over the phone in time.

Is there any type of simple software that can permanently test the connection to the internet and over the VPN, so that I can judge if the VPN or broadband is dropping.
some kind of permanent ping would do, that logs failures.

cheers in advance

You can use Netgong. It will monitor connections from a PC or server to multiple connections. It is basically a ping tool that can be set to ping multiple devices at 'x' minute intervals. You can set it up for example to ping the local router, an ISP's gateway, an internet site, the remote VPN router, and/or a device on the remote network. It will maintain an html log of failures and can be set to send alerts if there is a failure. The application is reasonably priced and has a 30 day free trial period.

If you are using hardware VPN, set up logging and be able to access the logs. This will generally tell you.

Two common causes for disconnects:
1. People lose track of time and the connection times out.
2. The connection is flaky (common), VPN is picky (packets lost), and disconnects.

The logs will shed light on this.

thanks rob

I should have added, by monitoring different points between client and host you can determine where the connection is being dropped.
Cheers!

I've seen the ping rate drop at about 96% when over the VPn and nothing when pinging google.

For win8/2012, Right click on the start screen and choose "All Apps"

For 8.1/2012 R2, Microsoft added a visual cue when a mouse is present in the lower left of the start screen. Simply left-clicking on the downward pointing arrow icon will bring up the same view.

For 8/8.1/2012/2012 R2, Ctrl-Tab will bring up the All Apps view as well.

Try the following. It works an absolute treat on my Windows 8.1 machine. It will work on any Windows machine (Servers too).

Right Click on the Taskbar
Select Toolbar, New Toolbar
Add the following content in the space provided:
%ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms

Save the toolbar. It should call itself Programs.

John, you should have noticed that though that toolbar is a nice thing, it is not the same as the "all programs button" of win7. The all programs button in 7 (and also the arrow at the modern start menu) will expand not only your path
%ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms but also
%appdata%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms so both are accessible at the same time.

The toolbar above automatically adds new programs and expands as you go. Everything I add is in there and I have not had to adjust it in over a year.

adding our terminal server to allow users login

adding our terminal server to allow users login

I have installed the RD licensing on our main domain server and all looks good. I’ve added in our 5 user CAL’s to the main server. We have a different server that we are using for terminal services and that is where I’m not sure how to add that in. Can you please help with this.

Run then add roles wizard, choose the scenario based install instead of role based install, then complete the wizard. It will set up a majority of your server for you.

Once complete, open server manager, click on "remote desktop" on the pane. You'll get a nice getting started guide in the main pane and graphical representation of your current setup. You can click the graphic for the licensing server and follow the popups to add the existing licensing server you've set up.

During the setup of the TS role, you should be prompted to add the users or groups who should have access to log on to the TS. I would just like to point out that you should set up an AD group for that purpose. It's always easier to manage access using groups: you can just add users to that group or remove them as your needs change.

If you don't add the users or group during the initial setup, adding the TS role will add a local group on the TS called "Remote Desktop Users," so you can manually add any users or groups to that group later on. By default, domain admins & local admins have rights to log on to the TS using an RDP connection. Any non-admin users will have to be members of that group to be able to log on (or they have to be a member of a group that is a member of the RDUsers group).

So, is there a part of the install that runs on the domain server and then some other part that gets installed on the actual terminal server or is everything on the domain server? I'm just a bit confused

Hi there, here is where I am at with this;
I found a document about installing the minimum amount of roles and features. I was following the following document and stopped at Step 8
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2833839
The one role that I did install additionally to this is the RD Connection Broker. I didn't bother doing the rest of the steps because it appeared to me that they didn't apply to my configuration.
All installed and I've licensed the server. By the way, this was all done on the domain server SVR1
When I log into the terminal server, SVR2, I can only connect up to 3 RD connections before it asks me to disconnect one of the other current connections. We have 5 licenses so I should be able to log in 5 RD user sessions.
I'm missing something in all of this

Ok, got my problem figured out so all is good

Windows Server 2012 Licencing Question

Windows Server 2012 Licencing Question

Hi Experts. I've trying to get a simple licencing question answered for Windows Server 2012 STD. If I buy Server 2012 STD, one CPU, how many Virtual Servers can I load for free. Appreciated. Thanks

I don't recommend getting licensing advice on EE or any forum. Call Microsoft. Nothing, and I mean *nothing* here is legally binding. And if you follow bad advice, "I read it on the internet" is not going to make much of a legal defense. You'll be on the hook for potentially big money for piracy.

With that said, in the US, 2012 Standard allows up to 2 VMs on a 1 or 2 CPU server as long as the host is only running the Hyper-V role and not offering other services or workloads. You can confirm this through Microsoft pre-sales.

You are entitled to run 2 additional VM's under the Standard OS. That is the limitation of 2012 STD.

Thanks Cliff and by that we mean as long as the server is acting as the host only and not offering other services. But if the server is offering other services, can it still run one additional VM for free?

The wording is ambiguous, but in general my interpretation (and most of the licensing experts I've spoken with at Microsoft) the answer is no. You are either taking advantage of 1+2, or you aren't. It is an either/or proposition. The logic being that if you have services you are currently running in the host, you should move that to a VM and the licensing cost does not change. Two VMs, or one VM and one physical OS is from a pricing standpoint the same, but from a supportability standpoint can be very different. So Microsoft is choosing to only allow configurations that help cut down their support costs, but do not incur extra costs to the user.

And as a clarification to Spartan_1337's comment, there is no "limitation" to the number of VMs in Standard. It is a licensing requirement, not a technical one. You can legally take standard and run 200 Linux VMs if you wanted. Or for VDI scenarios, run dozens of Windows client desktops as long as you license those windows desktops. The two-VM clause is strictly the rights to run two Windows Server VMs with the one license as long as you follow the licensing guidelines. And you can stack them...so two standard licenses allows you to run four VMs. Three allows six. And four would allow eight, but at that point you are in datacenter pricing where that might make more sense...unless you have 4 CPUs, where you'd need two datacenter licenses, then four Standard licenses is still cheaper. All about juggling the numbers and seeing what works.

Whilst I understand your comment about not getting advise from forums such as EE, after reading you last comment, I think it would be obvious to anyone why us lesser mortals do. Microsoft does not speak English and its nice to have it explained in that language. No guarantees of course. Thank you.

Hi,

I have a VPN server with strongSwan and xl2tpd, using PSK for authentication.

The clients are Window 7 and Windows 8. The initial connection is successful, then after 1 hour (~58 min) the connection drops. If I use dead peer detection the connections is cut off, if not the client show as connected but no packets go through.

You'll see below the log. Looks like the re-key is successful, but immediately after the client requests another re-key.
Any ideas?

Yup. Already tried it with 3600s, with 1800s etc. Spent about 3 days on this.

The same config works out-of-the-box (just install and copy config files) on a debian system, so it's something system specific. Could not figure out why.

Can you get a log from the client side?

Are all the clients at different locations, or could they by chance be at the same location. So that you have 2 or more client connections that appear to be coming from the same source IP address?

Any ideas please?

Changing the default gateway of an Exchange server

Changing the default gateway of an Exchange server

Hello,

We have a simple setup with a single domain controller and 2 Exchange 2013 servers running CAS/MBX roles and configured as a DAG in the same site.

We need to change the default gateway for the domain controller and the exchange servers as we are changing firewalls and it needs to go on a different IP for reasons that I won't go into here.

Can anyone think of any issues this will cause Exchange by doing this? I can't think of any however I wanted to run this past some experts in case there is something I hadn't thought of.

Thanks

Hi,
When modifying the default port used by an Exchange 2010 service, you must also modify the corresponding Windows Firewall with Advanced Security firewall rule to allow communication over the nondefault port you decide to use. Exchange Server doesn't change firewall rules when you change default ports used for a service.
More details about Network port usage and Firewall Hardening, for your reference:https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb691338.aspx#NetworkPortandFirewall

Thanks for the info but we're not modifying the default port used. Our plan is to change the current Default Gateway from 192.168.10.254 to 192.168.10.200

I'm assuming that there will be no problems with this. The firewall/router on 192.168.10.200 will be set up identically with the same access as is currently

Changing the IP address scheme on a DC or Exchange server is completely safe. Just do not change the name of the Exchange Servers or the domain name itself.

A side from that everything should be fine. Do this off hours to ensure that DNS has updated properly and to test after changes have been made.

Will.

Thanks will, that is what I expected

there are many reasons of this problem. One of the main reason might be that you haven't close outlook properly that may lead to outlook data file corruption . To know more about the possible reasons and solution check this out :http://www.intrigua.com/scenario/ost-is-not-closed-properly.html

Microsoft Excel - automatically copy rows and columns to another
worksheet

Microsoft Excel - automatically copy rows and columns to another worksheet

I am an Excel novice, so this may be a very basic question -

I have a list of clients in a worksheet in Excel (with columns 'Name', 'Title', 'Company'). What I want to do is copy the list to another worksheet through some sort of link or formula, such that when I add rows to the client list worksheet, this is reflected in the other worksheet; and when I delete rows, or change data in cells, these changes update automatically in the other worksheet.

I think VLOOKUP is how to do it but I'm not sure, VLOOKUP requires common data between worksheets and I don't really have that here - I just want to show data from one worksheet in another, so I can add columns to show other kinds of info for these clients.

If the first sheet is Sheet1 then enter this formula on sheet2 A1 and then copy it down and across as far as required

=IF(INDEX(Sheet1!$1:$1048576,ROW(),COLUMN())="","",INDEX(Sheet1!$1:$1048576,ROW(),COLUMN()))

If the first sheet is Sheet1 then enter this formula on sheet2 A1 and then copy it down and across as far as required

=IF(INDEX(Sheet1!$1:$1048576,ROW(),COLUMN())="","",INDEX(Sheet1!$1:$1048576,ROW(),COLUMN()))

Simple question which might not have a simple answer:
Why do you need a copy of the list in another sheet? Can you not add the other columns alongside the original list?

Thanks
Rob H

Remotely Uninstall MS Visio and MS Project

Remotely Uninstall MS Visio and MS Project

Dear All ,

i have around 500+ Pc's that have MS Projects & MS Visio installed versions 2010 and 2007, i want to uninstall them manually , can i have the way and best practice ?

i already try below solution with no result

I suggest you do it via group policy where applications will be uninstalled using WMIC.EXE. Below is a sample script you could run as a computer policy:
WMIC product where name like "%Microsoft Project%" call uninstall
/no interactive

You could also run the following running Command Prompt as domain administrator:WMIC
Product
Node:remote-computer-name product like "%Microsoft Project%" call uninstall /nointeractive

I need help on exactly how to fix this error. See attached. I read the "Resolution" at the bottom, but it's not clear on exactly how to do it.

I would appreciate exact steps, please.

Do you get this error on member computer of the domain? If yes, is the computer added to the domain?

Do you get this error on member computer of the domain? If yes, is the computer added to the domain?

It is a DC 2008 R2

Follow the below steps one by one:-

To verify that the BuiltinAdministrators, NT AuthorityEnterprise Domain Controllers, and Authenticated Users groups are defined in the policy setting “Access this computer from the network” (using Group Policy Results)

Log on to the domain controller as a member of the Domain Admins group.
Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Group Policy Management.
Expand Forest: , right-click Group Policy Results, and then click Group Policy Results Wizard.
On the Welcome page, click Next.
Click This computer, and then click Next.
Click Do not display user policy settings in the results (display computer policy settings only), and then click Next.
On the Summary page, click Next, and then click Finish.
Click Settings, and then click show all.
Verify that the groups BUILTINAdministrators, NT AuthorityEnterprise Domain Controllers, and Authenticated Users are defined in the Access this computer from the network policy setting under the following node:Computer Configuration | Policies | Windows Settings | Security Settings | Local PoliciesUser Rights Assignment
Note the value of the winning GPO for this policy setting if it is defined.
If necessary, use the following procedure to define the BuiltinAdministrators, NT AuthorityEnterprise Domain Controllers, and Authenticated Users groups to the policy setting Access this computer from the network.

To define the BuiltinAdministrators, NT AuthorityEnterprise Domain Controllers, and Authenticated User groups in the policy setting “Access this computer from the network”

Log on to the domain controller as a member of the Domain Admins group.
Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Group Policy Management.
Expand Forest: , expand Domains, , and then expand the Group Policy Objects folder.
If the Access this computer from the network policy setting was not defined for this domain controller, right click the Default Domain Controllers GPO, otherwise, right-click the winning GPO that you noted in step 10 of the procedure immediately above this one, and then click Edit.
In the console tree, expand the following node:Computer Configuration | Policies | Windows Settings | Security Settings | Local Policies | User Rights Assignment
In the details pane, double-click Access this computer from the network.
Click Add User or Group, click Browse, type Administrators;Enterprise Domain Controllers;Authenticated Users and then click OK.

To verify that the BuiltinAdministrators, NT AuthorityEnterprise Domain Controllers, Everyone, or Authenticated Users groups are not in the policy setting “Deny access to this computer from the network”

Verify that either the policy setting Deny access to this computer from the network is not listed in the Resultant Set of Policies, or the security groups BuiltinAdministrators, NT AuthorityEnterprise Domain Controllers, Everyone, or Authenticated Users are not defined in the policy settings of the, Deny access to this computer from the network user right, located under the following node:Computer Configuration | Policies | Windows Settings | Security Settings | Local PoliciesUser Rights Assignment
If any of these security groups is defined in the policy setting of the Deny access to this computer from the network user right, note the value for the winning GPO for this policy setting, then proceed to step 11. If none of those security groups is defined in the policy setting, then you should now be in a compliant state.
In the group policy management console, expand Forest: , expand Domains, , and then expand the Group Policy Objects folder.
Right-click the winning GPO that you noted in step 10, and then click Edit.
In the console tree, expand the following node:Computer Configuration | Policies | Windows Settings | Security Settings | Local Policies | User Rights Assignment

I added Enterprise Domain Controllers. See attached. Please verify this is now correct.

Yes it looks ok, I assume you added the "Enterprise Domain Controllers" from add users or group tab.

Best Method To Perform Domain Migration

Best Method To Perform Domain Migration

Hello,

I am in the process of performing a domain migration. All computers are running Windows 7.

Unfortunately there is no trust between the domains and it is not possible to create one.

I am manually migrating the computer from domain 1 to domain 2.

I then logon to the new user account in domain 2. I need to migrate the profile from the user1 account to the new user2 account on the same computer.

What is the best and easiest method of doing this?

If manually copying files, I can manually move the Documents, Desktop, Favorites, etc... What other folders do I need to migrate? AppData? Anything else?

Thanks,

Mike

Go to http://www.forensit.com/downloads.html

Download User Profile Wizard 3.8. You can migrate the profile easily to new domain.

Go to http://www.forensit.com/downloads.html

Download User Profile Wizard 3.8. You can migrate the profile easily to new domain.

The method we follow is to use the in-built Windows Easy Transfer wizard to backup the documents/settings (profile) for the user, remove the computer from the domain, add it to the new domain and run the wizard to transfer the profile to the new domain account.

For the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard I did not see an option to transfer to new profile on the same computer.

When you are restoring the profile after selecting the folder there is an option to chose which user account you want to apply it to. Off the top of my head I believe it's either under "Customize" or "Advanced Settings" when it says which account it's restoring to. You do need to log in at least once with the new account before you do this otherwise the transfer wizard won't see the new account as a viable option.

Excellent solution!

I was trying to clean install windows 2012 R2 on supermicro computer as Windows 2012 is eval is expiring soon and I could not find license for Windows 2012 standard for upgrade.
When I try to install Windows 2012 R2 it does not detect HDD. Server is setup without RAID with three HDD for 2 tb each in AHCI mode. WIndows 2012 std was working but I don't know, if it needs driver for WIndows 2012 R2.

Hard drive western digital WD2002FAEX2tb
Supermicro model x9drw-3ln4f

The hard drive is unimportant. You need a driver for the controller the drive is connected to. Why are you using ONLY one drive?

Go to Super Micro's site, download the drivers for the motherboard and load them.

Microsoft Outlook Help

Microsoft Outlook Help

Hi, I have been trying for three days to set up new email addresses in Microsoft Outlook with no success. At one time I set up an email address as the default email and that email has been deleted but now I can't get into Outlook to set up new email addresses even though I have set up two new ones and put them in Microsoft Folder under my documents as well as the C:UsersC AAppDataLocalMicrosoft. Please see the pics below to see what I'm doing wrong.

How can I fix this? Thanks

See if you can open Outlook in safe mode (Start key, then Run, then type "outlook.exe /safe" without the quotes.

If you can get Outlook up and running that way, then try adding the new email account.

Problem in Installing Dropbox on Windows 8.1.

Problem in Installing Dropbox on Windows 8.1.

I just purchase a Windows 8.1. note book. 500 Giga; I am the only one user and Administrator. I have a dropbox account. I want to replicate it on this machine. I went on my dropbox account. I downloaded dropbox and installed it. I can access the panel. End of the story. I cannot do anything else.

1. panel is frozen saying "connexion ..." and that dropbox is starting (for two days)
2. I can access the preference/options panel, but is also frozen.

I sent a mail to dropbox support to ask two days ago. But also frozen.
Hes someone an idea ?
Thank you !

I have had issues with DropBox and even Google drive apps in the past if Internet Explorers security settings were too high. Give that a shot first.

I have had issues with DropBox and even Google drive apps in the past if Internet Explorers security settings were too high. Give that a shot first.

Have you tried uninstalling it then re-installing it? Also does it work when you access the dropbox folder your drive from file explorer instead of going through the panel?

Gabriel, I removed all the firewalls and made a rule i the active one when back (ESET) to permit Dropbox back and forth.
Takunda, I have installed and uninstalled it three times (however it went a little further the first time). I do not recall if this was before or after I installed ESET.
The Dropbox directory had not been created. Qhen I cleck on the directory or on the site in the panel nothing happens; I created the dropbox file where it should have been, this has had no impact.
Thank you for the help.

windows server 2008 won't start ntoskrnl.exe

The system lost power and crashed during a windows update. I am now getting the following error. I have the installation disk but it does not repair the computer.

The error deals with corruption of the boot sector, bcdedit/bootrec might need to be used to set the bootrec.

The updates adjust bootup to apply the changes.

Do you have backups or better a redundant system that performs those tasks?

Before you try fixing the boot sector (good suggestion above) .. try pulling all your memory and add some known good memory. I have seen this error thrown because of this before. This is a quick test then on to arnold's suggestion.

I tried the repaid through the command prompt. it didn't work. I am trying to restore but I was hoping to not loose any of the info. The memory is fine , I was able to reinstall on a new disk to test the system.
thanks

what does the system do?
Are you able to boot the system either with a linux/windows PE where you have network access as well as access to the underlying data?

You might want to run sfc offline to see whether it will restore, restore points?

....

i was not able to boot . it would show options to start windows but non of them worked. i ended up restoring windows from an older backup. took the data drive out. replace with blank. I then put in the old data drive after the restore was done.
thanks

Apple does not provide or support Safari on Windows anymore. There is no legal download. The last version for Windows was Safari 5.1. The current version for OSX is 8.0.7. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safari_%28web_browser%29

A discontinued product is guaranteed to attract more problems than benefits ...better stick to actively developed browser like
Opera :download
Firefox : download
Chrome :download

I add my two cents to the above--stay with a supported products, I love Firefox. Took a few months to get used to but once I did I will "never" go back to IE. Do you need safari for a particular reason/purpose--if so what and then maybe we can advice best thing to do.

You do not need to download Safari if you are simply going to use it for testing purposes. One of the highly recommended websites to do testing on Mac Safari is by Browserstack

Say goodbye to your setup of virtual machines and devices.

Try Windows Start Up Repair with the Windows 7 DVD. Here is a Seven Forums Tutorial for this.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.html

Sorry, I interpreted "right back" as the system starting. My apologies.

I just tried to do the repair a few times with no luck so I just tried to do a system restore to an earlier point and now of the points will allow me to restore it states you must always restore the drive that contains windows. Yoou must enable system protection on this drive .... and it doesnt allow me to put a check mark ...

If the Startup Repair won't work, and nothing else you tried will work, you need to back up the system (boot from a bootable DVD and copy backups to a USB key (or keys), format and install Windows 7 again.

how to Getting a Python script to run in the background (as a service) on boot ?
and how to Getting a bash script to run on boot windows ?

Ok.

Use the task scheduler. Task scheduler knows a trigger named "at startup".
For python, the script would need to be called by the python executable, so the tasks command would be python's executable and the argument would be your script.

As for bash: that is unix. If you meant to write "batch", then task scheduler is again your solution.

I'm wrong a bash file = .bat file sorry I am accustomed to talk about the term linux

Windows 10 network properties cant change

Windows 10 network properties cant change

Hi, new Windows 10 (10049), cant change the ip address in network properties. Its only one user on this machine and that user is administrator. The properties button is gray so i cant click on it.

I am using Windows 10 Build 10041 which is (I think) the latest release.

Go to the Desktop, right click on Network or go to Control Panel, All Items, Network and Sharing Center and the network window opens.

Click on Change Adapter settings and then right click on your adapter and select properties. You change the IP in the TCP/IP configuration. This is the same as Windows 8.

Does this work?

Also, why not use DHCP? It works better.

If you cannot do these things, run SFC /SCANNOW from an administrative command prompt, allow to complete, restart and test.

Did your Build 10041 upgrade complete successfully? My upgrade including download took a couple of hours.

Try shutting the machine all the way down (fully off) and starting up again.

if i could use dhcp there isnt a problem, but i want a static ip. The button properties that you is referring to is gray (not possible to click on). I have 4 networks card and its gray on all cards. I can use netsh from command prompt to change the ip, but not from the GUI. Is it a bug in Windows 10?

It possibly is. I only have one Network connection (Ethernet Network 9) which is pointing to my real NIC and I cannot change it because it is not running. For me that is not an issue because VMware is handling the network. For the same reason, I cannot change it with NETSH either.

If the command prompt works, use that and use the Feedback button to report the problem.

I filed feedback on this issue and as I filed feedback, the same bug came up from other people. So I have confirmed it is a bug and the workaround (as you noted) is to use command line to manage.

ok, thanx.

After installing many updates, Windows Update on Windows 7 computers
fails

After installing many updates, Windows Update on Windows 7 computers fails

I have 3 brand new Dell computers, 2 laptops and 1 desktop. They are all having the same problem. I have already wiped the hard drives and reinstalled the OS from the factory image.

Out of the box, I install Microsoft System Essentials. That installs fine. I then apply all available Windows Updates. It applies most of them, but then starts to fail on the last few. I do them 1 at a time, get 1 or 2 to apply (rebooting in between), but then can't get any of the last 3 to apply. I get an 800706F7 error.

I have tried all of the usual work-arounds. It appears to me that there is a bug in one of the Windows updates that causes the Windows Installer to fail after that is applied. Anyone have any ideas?

Hmm, it looks like one of the recent Windows Update releases has been pulled due to causing issues with installing later updates:http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/12/microsoft-withdraws-bad-windows-7-update-that-broke-future-windows-7-updates/
One of this week's Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 7 has been withdrawn after some users discovered that it blocked installation of software containing digital signatures, including first- and third-party software, and even other Windows updates.

The problem update is called KB3004394....

.... The error code 0x8004FF91 seems to be a common finding.

MS has released a patch to remove the update from Windows 7 computers:https://support.microsoft.com/kb/3024777

Hello,

Please try this Microsoft Fix.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/troubleshoot-problems-installing-updates#1TC=windows-7

If you persist the issue after the Microsoft Fix then Use the below solution.

1. Open a CLI and enter net stop wuauserv to stop the Windows Update Service.
2. Navigate to your Windows folder and rename SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old.
3. Go back to the CLI and enter net start wuauserv to start the Windows Update Service?.
4. It'll give you an error message when you go back to Windows updates, but recheck and have them download again.
5.Do the updates process.
6. Delete the SoftwareDistribution.old folder.?

Thanks,
Dilip Patidar....

I have already wiped the hard drives and reinstalled the OS from the factory image. It still surprises me I see problems like this and why these happen, so long as you allowed all the correct procedures in sequence everything works fine for me.
A clean install from an image?
What was in this image? Any updates slipstreamed?
Possibly there are keys here
Out of the box, I install Microsoft System Essentials. <>You mean Microsoft Security Essentials?
It's best to have none in my humble opinion when you start a new windows as windows has the inbuilt Windows Defender.
When you installed windows did you agree to allow windows updates to install straight up?
It's a good idea to wait on that as you load programs and software such as Essentials without windows updates running in the background.
When you have office installed and the email client installed all the usual stuff and everything is running well then allow windows updates to run as there will be plenty, this method prioritizes the order and includes office updates.
Do these DEL have internet connection?
MS Security Essentials may have blocked updates or caused problems corruption.
Did you allow Microsoft to decide what updates are required? Install automatically?
As there are some updates that have had to be fixed with new patches.
With a fresh windows there a lot of updates and a reboot is required several times so that each completes.
Take a look a the reliability monitor go to search type in reli run it then have a look at the errors.
What's listed in your recent updates installed?
From MS windows
Windows Update error 80072efe or 80072f76
Applies to Windows 7
If you receive Windows Update error 80072efe or 80072f76 while checking for updates, it might be caused by a connection interruption between your computer and the Windows Update servers. Close Windows Update, wait 10 to 15 minutes, and then run Windows Update again. You can also wait for Windows Update to run at its next scheduled time.
If you still receive one of these errors, you can run the Windows Update Troubleshooter that will automatically find and fix some common problems with Windows Update

"windows has the inbuilt Windows Defender." I think that is true of Win 8, but not Win7.
Microsoft Security Essentials for Win 7 is superior to Windows Defender for Win 7. Just the reverse for Win 8.

Also, make sure the date/time on the PCs is correct. Windows Update may work funny if the date/time on the PC is off.

If later ,I add the HDD to another server joined to the domain, will all AD permissions be intact.

All permissions for domain accounts will remain.

All permissions for Well-Known local accounts ('Administrator', 'Administrators', 'Users', ...) will remain.

All permissions for local groups on the server will obviously be lost.

I assume this is not a domain controller, right? Otherwise I agree with oBdA above. However taking that drive from the removed server and putting it in another server will affect some permissions, make some files and folders inaccessible (mainly OS related ones) that use SYSTEM permissions but you can regain control of those by taking "ownership". However data files and folders would not be affected.

Like the default Administrators group (S-1-5-32-544), System is a well-known SID and is S-1-5-18 on all systems.

But I have to correct myself: "Administrator" only has a well-known RID (always ends with -500), but has a SID derived from the local machine. So any permissions granted explicitly to the "Administrator" account will be "lost".

No , it is not a domain controller.

I am only concerned of the data files and folder.

then you will be good to go

Sysprep Windows 7

Sysprep Windows 7

I'm trying to create a windows 7 image since I have many pc's with of the same hardware. I haven't done this in a while but in Win XP I would have to run sysprep before I created the image. Do I still need to do that in Win 7 to regenerate the sids? Also I was going to use clonezilla to create an image for multiple machines that I can store on a usb drive for quick restores. Is clonezilla the best free utility or is there something better to use?

Microsoft only officially supports imaging that uses Sysprep. In the real world, you can probably get by without it on workstations (not servers) but I always say do whats supported so you have the option to call Microsoft for help. Other utilities, even Russinovich's own NewSID from the Sysinternals, will not do a good job or can even damage your install. Sysprep is the only way. It's free, and its built in so use it. Don't forget, you can only Sysprep an image 3 times then you're locked out and have to start fresh. Don't try and hack around it either... the limit is Microsoft's and its there for a reason.

Side notes with Sysprep: Make this registry key change BEFORE running sysprep to keep all of the drivers you install:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSetupSysprepSettingssppnp

set PersistAllDeviceInstalls to 1.

As far as imaging software, Clonezilla, Casper, or my personal favorite Acronis will all do a good basic job with advanced features depending on licensing and feature-set of each vendors utility.

And for more information, check out this thread: http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Windows/Windows_7/Q_28113660.html?related=28582967

Thx

how do you run it in Win 7 do I need the iso, I remember have to extract a cab file in Win XP

35. Simplify Cloned Machine Setups. You can't run Sysinternals' newsid utility to change the identity of a cloned Windows 7 machine (either a virtual machine or imaged PC). Instead, create a template installation then run sysprep /oobe /generalize /reboot /shutdown /unattend:scriptfile. Clone or copy this virtual machine file. When it launches, it will get a new SID and you can fill in the name. The reference for building unattended script files is at tinyurl.com/winunattend.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2009.10.77windows.aspx?sid=5cbb6c33dee24e04beee633c420481a2

I use clonezilla often, while i can't say it is the "best" it is free, and easy.. familiar for me to use.. So i just use that.. I know you can use other GUI oriented ones, but i think i have become so used to clonezilla i don't bother with the other ones..

Hope that helps..

NOTE: You don't need to sysprep cloned machines if.. IF there is no software installed on it.. There is some issue with the autoSID configuration in Windows 7 that messes up, if there is software installed already..

Otherwise you shouldn't need to run sysprep at all.. "Kinda pointless, if there is no software i know" Just pointing that out..

You dont need the ISO; its built in to Windows. Run this from Start --> Run to pull up the GUI::
C:WindowsSystem32sysprepsysprep.exe

Or... from command line:
C:WindowsSystem32sysprepsysprep.exe /oobe /generalize /shutdown

Hope this helps get you started. You'll need to read up more as you go (extra features like unattended answer files, etc. expand your abilities) as well as experiment to make sure everything you install tolerates the Sysprep treatment. As Rob G. mentioned there are a few apps that don't tolerate it well, but I've found they're pretty few and far between.

Thx

Wrong.
If your machines are company machines and you ever need ANY kind of software support from Microsoft then You sysprep.

If a machine is cloned but not sysprepped it is unsupported.

If a machine ever takes part in network controlled applications like WSUS or enterprise AV systems then not sysprepping will cause problems.

Microsoft do not support image distribution without sysprep for a reason.

How do I repair a Win7 registry key whose values I cannot display or
delete?

How do I repair a Win7 registry key whose values I cannot display or delete?

I prepared to upgrade the Wacom Intuos Pro tablet by uninstalling the existing driver per Wacom's support. The uninstall process hung the computer for over an hour. I forced a power-off per Wacom's direction. Retried uninstall and similar behavior. Wacom can't/won't help and I can't get beyond first level support.

All this left me with a screwed up registry entry key "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTWow6432NodeAppIDnpWacomTabletPlugin.dll". If I go to the key I get an "Error Opening Key": "npWacomTabletPlugin.dll cannot be opened. An error is preventing this key from being opened. Details: The system cannot find the file specified." If I try to look at the permissions for the key I get "The requested security information is either unavailable or can't be displayed." If I try to export the key I get "Export Registry File": "The selected branch does not exist. Make sure the the correct path is given". If I try to delete the key I get "Error Deleting Key": "Cannot delete npWacomTabletPlugin.dll: Error while deleting key." I tried Sysinternals' RegDelNull. It did not show the key as having nulls.

I wasn't thinking while waiting for Wacom's response and let any Restore Point slip off the end.

I can manually recreate the values in the key if I can just delete/re-add it. Any ideas how to do that?

Thanks,

Joe M

The Win7 64-bit computer works except for the tablet. "Programs and Features" shows the "Wacom Tablet" v6.3.7-6, the "Web Tablet FB Plugin 64 bit" v2.1.0.3 and also the 32-bit plugin.

I am not able to do a system restore because the Restore Points from before the uninstallation have been pushed out of the cache.

Have you tried doing a repair install of the original Wacom tablet driver? that might restore the registry entry & the missing file so you can uninstall it.

Here is the download page for Wacom legacy drivers:http://us.wacom.com/en/support/legacy-drivers/

Try running regedit under the SYSTEM account. Download the Sysinternals suite: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb842062.aspx. Extract to folder, run Command Prompt as elevated user (basically, right click and pick Run As Administrator), navigate to that folder within the command console, then type psexec -i -s regedit.exe and see if you can get into the key now.

Thanks Adam. That did the trick.

When I ran regedit under the SYSTEM account, the key did not show up. I manually added the key and then added the one value. Now it is readable via a normal invocation of regedit.

I would have spent a long time before I found that approach, if ever.

Thanks for the prompt reply. It does appear at the top of my browser window, regardless of the site. I'm running a Malwarebytes scan now. Where do I check on addons?

Alt > Tools Menu > Manage add-ons

Also check installed programs

I've never seen this before and can't find anything similar doing a search

Definitely do not enter the password. Try running chameleon from malwarebytes.org (malwarebytes.org/chameleon). Run the svchost file in the chameleon directory. It will update MBAM then run a stealth scan with MBAM. Otherwise, run SPYBHOREMOVER from securityxploded.com.

Thank you. Not sure which of the solutions solved the problem (unfortunately I ran them all before checking), but I think it was an add-on called Lync Browser from Microsoft.

how to recover an old CD for which the company went out of business?

how to recover an old CD for which the company went out of business?

Is there any software out there on the market that I can use to recover the contents of an old shareware CD for which the company went out of business?

Now I don't get it anymore. You clearly asked "how to recover an old CD" AND "Is there any software out there", and now you change it to, "do I have the right to use it"?
Research if the company was indeed sold or not. If you're sure it wasn't, sure, use the software. That's because the original company can't sue you, because it doesn't exist. No one can EVER sue you, just as zombies don't exist (as in, only the original company can sue you, and since it doesn't exist anymore, any new company is a new company and not the old one).

Depends on what the problem is. Usually you don't use software, as this isn't really a software problem. I'm just guessing you can read the CD because the reader will say it can't read it.
If it's because of scratches, use those CD cleaning kits (usually with fluids, sand paper etc). You "polish" away the scratches (manual will probably tell you to use straight motions from inward to outward).
If it's because the age, sunlight etc, the chemicals that holds all the data (zeroes and ones), maybe all is lost. You can only use software to recover whole files. Basically, you use the software to skip over unreadable parts, it won't magically make files appear.

I haven't really heard of any valid place that still sells used software, since the far majority of the model has moved to download only for most of the distributions. You can try ebay perhaps?

No. That's not exactly what I meant.

What I meant was whether I could get the files to install from a CD that was from a previous version of Windows and not have any problems with copyprotection?

Removing the copy protection is called hacking and is illegal even if the original company doesn't exist. You don't need software to hack it, you need a hacker, by that I mean a person able to hack software If that kind of software was available, it would be the top seller in every software store.

No. I don't want to remove any copy protection. That's not what I mean either.

What I mean is that if the company went out of business and I use their software, (just by installing it the normal way), then I am not in trouble with any intellectual property rights that they have because there is no longer any money backing up their institution as a company.

Although sometimes the software rights are sold off to some other company when the first company goes out of business.

how to disable this using browser of your choice (ideally chrome)

Hi.
It seems to be a problem with your version of Chrome, is it up to date?
problems with sound when (un)plugging headsets in Google Chrome
I have never seen youtube video stop if the audio is unplugged that is a windows problem switching to speakers.
All I can think of is not to use USB.
I have the same problem with windows switching from usb to speakers on my desktop so when I want to listen through TV stereo amp or in a another room
A work around I have is to use the speakers out socket, add a double adapter 3.5mm connect the speakers back to this with the first hole on the double adapter, but turn them down
see this image of the double adapter 3.5 mono
Buy an in ear or earbuds with avolume control on them 3.5mm and plug them into the other hole next to speakers

Using these from your sound card out you can use any browser any media player as it works through your sound card with your PC speakers, just silence or mute the speakers. Or just unplug the speakers saves buying the DB adapter and plug in the 3.5 mm cable to where your PC speakers go.
cheers

Unfortunately this is not actually normal behaviour in Windows. So the answer would be there is no way to do what you want directly.

Interesting though that while looking for a workaround for your issue I found Google development notes describing this behaviour as both a bug and a feature request.

Do you still have the link in your history?

And my other problem is that I can not use speaker jack on my computer due to some problem which I have asked about on ee.
So I must use usb to (speaker, mic)
So Merete's answers are of a speaker jack

rgb192 I cant answer for Brian Boyes where he got his references from.
But I need to know
Is this a laptop or desktop to determine your audio outputs since you say> "I can not use speaker jack on my computer due to some problem which I have asked about on ee. " << please explain

Not sure which computer I was on when I answered that, but I'll have a look in my histories and see if I can find it.

There are emulators out there but they aren't good enough yet.

iPadian is probably the most well known but it has a long way to go. See http://www.sevenforums.com/software/333220-ios-emulator-windows-7-ultimate-32-bit.html You can install apps but they have to come from the iPadian store and there is only a limited number of them.

I'm overseas and will come back to this topic on my return in a couple of weeks.

You can't run an iPad app directly on a PC, but you can mirror the screen to your PC, which is sort of the same thing. You just need additional software:

Windows 2012 R2 Activation

Windows 2012 R2 Activation

We purchased a license and have downloaded the iso and product key from licensing.microsoft.com. Now that we have the OS installed, we cannot activate Windows 2012.

I ran a power shell command to delete a key that some how got populated during the installation. Now, I see no link to try and activate it again.

We are NOT using a KMS server.

What can be done to get this activated now?

When I run slui 3 and put in the product key it tells me the key is not valid.

When I run slui 3 and put in the product key it tells me the key is not valid.

The has to match the version, edition and language of the OS installed. What version of Windows 2012 have you installed?
There is Essentials (similar to SBS), Standard or Datacenter editions.

I am using 2012 standard R2 and that was what was downloaded via licensing.microsoft.com. I am using the mak license key. No time during the installation was I asked to enter the product key.

I ran slmgr -up in powershell to try and correct the issue.

Windows Virtual Machine Shared Folder Can't be Found On a MAC

Windows Virtual Machine Shared Folder Can't be Found On a MAC

I've recently migrated shared folders from an old Windows platform to a virtual machine. The share name is the same. When I try to remap the drive on a MAC to the new VM it's not finding the server or share. The mapping works to the old physical windows box. Is there an issue with mapping from a MAC to a virtual machine?

Thanks for the help.

Brian Brown

It should work like a physical machine, does it work when you do it from a Windows machine? Can you resolve the name of the virtual server (DNS)? Did you try disabling the firewall on the virtual machine even just for testing?

Does the virtual machine have a different name and/or IP-address than the physical server? How are you doing the share exactly?

The new share works fine from all other Windows desktops, name resolves from DNS, ping to name returns IP. The new VM does have a different IP address and name. Here is how I'm attempting to map on MAC;

Finder / GO / Connect to Server / smb://xx.xx.xx.xx/sharename

Did you try with cifs://xx.xx.xx.xx/sharename?

Have not tried this, will let you know if it works as soon as I can get on the users MAC, probably this afternoon.

Thanks Spravtek.

Problems with installing SQL Server 2012 Express on my Windows 8.1

Problems with installing SQL Server 2012 Express on my Windows 8.1 machine

Hi,

I have this problem that I can't find a solution for. I'm trying to install sql server 2012 express on my machine running windows 8.1. I've tried all teh following:
I tried to download dotnet35 and install it, but int didn't work.

Then I tried to install it from Add/Remove Windows features but that didn't work either.
I then found this article how I can do it offline (since my problem was exactly those described in the first steps when installing sql and net35).
http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/UploadFile/47548d/how-to-install-sql-server-2012-on-windows-8-1/

I followed all instructions but then when I run the command in the prompt (even though I've copied the folder from the installation disc and saved it exactly as in the article) I get the following error in the prompt:

could you try removing the space before NetFx3 (FeatureName:NetFx3 )

Hi and thanks for answer,

I did that now but then it says:DISM doesn't regognize the command line option "Access"

Peter

Hi again,

I found out that the above error came from having a space between Limit and Access. When I remoded it the command started, but I still get the same error that the source file cannot be found even if the whole directory is copied there.

How to set windows event viewer to automatically send email based on

How to set windows event viewer to automatically send email based on logged event ?

Hi all,

How can we set the event Viewer in Windows Server 2008R2 and 2012 R2 to send out email based on the logged event ?

I'd like to use it to know for account lock out trouble shooting and some other monitoring purpose.

Thanks

Have a read of this article which should point you in the right direction: http://blogs.technet.com/b/jhoward/archive/2010/06/16/getting-event-log-contents-by-email-on-an-event-log-trigger.aspx

You'll want to look at a 3rd party application to do this. 2008 R2 had a basic trigger, but is cumbersome to configure and adjust and has been deprecated in newer OSes. You could theoretically have a trigger fire off a script that has SMTP baked in, but again, you are now talking about a bunch of triggers and manually modifying scripts... not very scalable. There are enough event monitoring solutions that have databases of known event IDs, some relatively inexpensive, that you'll quickly get a return on investment from labor costs alone, regardless of OS.

You can make use of Log Parser to scan the logs and pull out selected event log which can be stored in Text file. And same can be sent with mail sending exe files with some vbscripts. On our servers we had installed this successfully and we used to get emails without any issues.

I strongly suggest you look at Splunk as it has advanced capabilities as well as a very user friendly interface for monitoring and alerting.

ok so in this case it is possible in Win2008R2 but somehow not for Server 2012 and newer ?

Disable Windows accessibility reading pane bar within Server 2012 R2

Disable Windows accessibility reading pane bar within Server 2012 R2

Somehow the Windows accessibility reading pane bar has become enabled within Server 2012 R2.

This means that there is a blue bar that appears everywhere I go within the Server 2012 R2 OS (see the screenshot).

Whatever is highlighted within the blue bar is read (as long as speakers are attached to the server).

I have gone into the Windows Accessibility portion of Control Panel and have tried to disable this but haven't been able to.

I won't be able to reboot this server for another month and I would like to disable this Windows accessibility reading pane bar.

Please provide me with the exact steps on how to do this.

I went ahead and raised the FFL to Server 2003, ran a repadmin /syncall, and checked the FFL on the SBS Server and the secondary Server 2003 DC offsite and they both show FFL as 2003. So this morning I go to promote one of the new Server 2012 machines to a domain controller and I get this error when I click NEXT after selecting "Add a domain controller to an existing domain". "Verification of Replica failed. The Forest Functional Level is Windows 2000. To install a Windows Server 2012 R2 domain or domain controller, the forest functional level must be Windows Server 2003 or newer."

I'm at a loss as Active Directory show the FFL as Windows Server 2003.

Are you absolutely sure you aren't confusing FFL and DFL (by far the most common mistake I see.) Some people dont even realize there is a difference, or that those are two separate things. *Both* must be raised. And I see no mention of you raising or checking the DFL.

I'm a dope, I only raised the DFL not the FFL.

Shadowless127,

Per your request, I have opened up your question. "accepted solution prematurely."

What's the issue now?

For whatever reason after I confirmed the DFL and FFL were raised on both 2003 DC's, and even after running repadmin /syncall and restart the Windows 2012 server, it took me like 15-20min for the new server to detect it was the appropriate Functional Level to allow me to continue with the promotion.

All is fixed now, and I will be awarding you the solution.
