Citrix Xenapp 6 to 7.5

Hi Experts,

We're going to begin a Citrix Migration project. This will involve moving from Xenapp 6 to Xenapp 7.5. The new servers images are ready but i would like some help with the user transition over to the new environment. In our current environment we use RDS profiles and we then redirect the users desktop and my documents.

Our question

We would like to automate the move of users mapped drives, desktop and documents over to the new environment.

How can this be done? I would like to hear from admins who have had to do something similar either in a project related or consultancy scenario.

We have many users with manual mapped drives (hence the above question)

Can you explain how drive mapping is configured and where citrix profile are stored.
In 7.5, For drive mapping you can use the policy when users launch the application and have to add the registry value under -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareCitrixUncLinks-> Under the key, create a DWORD - UNCEnabled and set the UNCEnabled value to 0. You can use the profile management to for the same on 7.5 environment. Hope you using the share drive for citrix profile. To configure the same follow this steps http://terenceluk.blogspot.sg/2014/11/configuring-citrix-profile-management.html

You must be upgrading server operating system also. So you have to configure new shared area to store user profile whether you use RDS profile or Citrix UPM. Test new profile thoroughly during testing phase. You can use group policy to configure mapped drive, folder redirection. You can use same home folder which you used earlier for folder redirection

Are you planning to stay on Windows 2008 R2 in XenApp 7.5 (I'd deploy 7.6 personally)? I'd recommend against a jump to 2012 if there's no driving need to deploy it. Also, it will simplify the transition since profiles and application compatibility won't be very different. Technically you can use the same user policy settings and login scripts, and even the same user profiles if you go that route. I'd create a new OU structure for the machines in the newer farm, and you can have a separation of the policy objects (a few settings will be different in 7.5/6).

We already have 7.5 built so we're not looking at 7.6 now. Yes thats we've done for the 7.5 farm - we've created a new OU with those servers in that OU with its new respective policies applying.

Is there an advantage to using UPM over RDS profiles?

Are you running Windows 2008 R2 in both farms?

Generally speaking, UPM works much better than standard roaming profiles. The profile sizes will be smaller, and you have better control. UPM is an add-on improvement to roaming profiles, and I've deployed at many environments, including enterprises with 60k users.
