windows server backup schedule keeps disappearing in SBS 2011

I have a server running SBS 2011.
I have backup assist performing daily backups of all user data as well as exchange database and taking the data off site using rsync.

I have windows server backup configured to do a full image backup of the server to a dedicated internal hard drive - this way we have offsite backups as well as a full local image backup just for convenient restores.

For some reason, each time I set up windows server backup schedule, it runs for a few days and then the schedule disappears and in the windows server backup console it reports that no backups are scheduled.

I cant understand what could be causing this.

Any ideas?



Did you setup your Windows Server Backup to do VSS copies rather than full backup? (Normally have to do this via a script rather than using the backup console).

Having two backup solutions backing up the same data can cause problems as both will be looking at the archive bit which tells the backup what was previously backed up.

I suspect windows server backup is having trouble finding out what was backed up previously due to the other backup solution changing the archive bit. It may be that because of this it removes the schedule believing another backup solution is already doing the backups.

It would also be worth checking your event logs for any issues with the backups - this may point to a conflict or error that causes the schedule to be deleted.

OK, firstly, with the windows backup I am doing a VSS copy.
And with backup assist I am doing a full backup.

I was originally using a script to back up, but it kept failing. Its strange because I do have other clients that are using the same method (backup assist of remote backups and windows backup for local).

OK fair point about the archive bit, I am not sure if backup assist uses that when doing rsync backups, but I will do some tests on that theory and come back.



think I have got to the issue -
Backup assist has an entry in task scheduler for its backup, so its obviously using the windows backup engine to perform the backup of exchange.
When I set windows backup schedule, it is overwriting that entry.

So I imagine that at some point, backup assist is overwriting the entry again itself, causing windows backup schedule to become unset.

Strange because in the other setup the two are working alongside each other without issue.

sorted - it was a third party program (backup assist) that was cancelling the job. When I turned off SBS backup reporting integration in backup assist it sorted the problem.



found the answer myself.
