Migrating from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013

Hello,

?

I am preparing to migrate from Windows 2008R2 & Exchange 2010SP2 to Windows 2012R2 with Exchange 2013.

?

Our single domain controller is running Windows 2003 SP2.

Domain functional level: Windows Server 2003?

Forest functional level: Windows Server 2003

?

Is there a good link or document you could furnish so that I follow appropriate steps?

?

Also, some specific questions.
•?Can I retain the Windows 2003 server for the time being? Or does it need to be replaced with a Windows 2008 or higher DC first?
•Does Exchange need to have SP3 prior to being able to add Exchange 2013 on the network and migrate?

Thanks in advance.

?

Regards,

Microsoft publishes all of that. You can see the domain (DC and functional level requirements) here:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996719(v=exchg.150).aspx

In short, 2003 is fine.

There is also official migration guidance there, and that is all I've ever needed when followed properly.

For your specific questions:
You do not *need* to replace your 2003 server yet. But keep in mind that end of life is *very* near and it should be replaced for other unrelated reasons. 2003 and 2012 don't always play well together, so if you can replace it, you should. There are some security related interactions that Microsoft simply cannot fix and have stated they will not fix.

Yes, you need SP3.

Here you will find a good step by step with pics to your migration

As for the 2003, if it is your Main DC that you should make at least your 2008 (Where the Exchange 2010 is) your main DC and move all your roles there. I don't know if that 2003 is 32 or 64 bits but for sure your 2008 is 64bits.

Good Luck!!

Thank you very much. Very helpful information.
