Getting "Internet Explorer Not Responding" messages when IE is not open

I have a customer where several times a day she gets a popup stating "Internet Explorer Not Responding" when IE is not open. What could be causing this? I looked and didn't see any services or processes pertaining to IE.

I would check for viruses and malware. Run your own scan followed by Malwarebytes. The reason I suggest this is because IE is not open. It will not "stop working" when it is closed.

You can try running System File Checker. Run SFC /SCANNOW from an admin command prompt, allow to complete, restart and test.

You can also set up a new, test Windows User Account (User Profile). If IE works correctly in the new profile, the current profile could be damaged.

Yes, I ran malwarebytes earlier but still showed up. I was thinking about uninstalling IE (or it's updates) and reinstalling it hoping it will fix any corrupted files.

In addition to my above steps, you can try the following:
Go to Programs and Features, Windows Features and remove (uncheck) Internet Explorer. Restart (you will be required to). Go back, enable (check) IE and restart again. Now test.

Do the other suggestions above as well.

Thx, will try that and provide feedback

it looks like some software tries to start IE
so look in task scheduler, and event viewer for more data on it

did you run these?
