windows 2012 file share issues.

i have a strange situation going on. if i save a file from one computer to the shared network drive on the server and attempt to browse to that file on another computer it does not show up for a period of time. hitting refresh does not help. is there a cause for this latency? the network consists of a windows 2012 R2 server, 1 xp workstation, and the rest are windows 7.

Offline files are likely the issue then. If the folder is offline, it'll tale a sync before it goes to the server for other machines to see. Slow links, unreliable switches, or bad NIC drivers (especially on the server) can cause a folder to unexpectedly go offline. I don't recommend offline files in most LAN situations.

Anything else in the mix? DFS? Offline files? Misconfigurations there are the usual culprits.

As an aside, have you tested from one win7 machine to another? If you are relying on XP, you'll definitely see oddities. XP doesn't support SMB2 or SMB3, and is out of extended support by a year. It won't be patched and really doesn't like file servers newer than 2008 R2. Neither 2012 nor 2012 R2 work well without tweaking.

DFS is not running. The XP machine is only used to scan documents and save them directly to the server. It doesn't do much else. Offline files are being used on the Win 7 workstations.
