Unable to load SP1 on a Windows 7 desktop

I have a user that has Windows 7 without the service pack 1 loaded. She needs this in order to upgrade IE so that she can get to certain sites that require a more current version of IE. Another IT guy says that he wasn't able to load SP1 and the system needs to be re-imaged. Is there a problem that you are aware of loading SP1 on a system that does not have it, if not, what is the best process to make that happen and the best place to download it?

As always, thank you for your assistance.

Run the Windows Update Readiness tool

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=20858 for x64

Then go to Microsoft -> Downloads and download SP1 for the machine in question. Run it and see if it installs.

I have had some issues with SP1 that won't install. It appears that it has installed (visible in Programs and Features), but newer versions of IE won't install because they claim SP1 is not installed. SP1 wouldn't uninstall through Programs and Features. I ended up reimaging.

That said, go ahead with Itzik's link, download the appropriate file, and give it a shot.

The Readiness tool that John suggested is also helpful at identifying potential obstacles.

I've seen this issue several times -- the following has always resolved it ...

==> Run Windows Update and do ALL of the updates, both critical and optional. Some of these will likely fail.

... Repeat the update process, again doing all of the updates -- again, a few may fail ... but just repeat it again until there are no more updates available. My experience is that those that fail once will either not be required again or will install okay on subsequent iterations.

Once you are at the point where there are no more updates, SP1 should have been installed.

As noted above, it will likely SEEM to install early in the process ... but will have failed. But on a subsequent iteration it installs just fine.

Not at all sure why this happens, but it's worked every time that I've had the issue.

it looks like it needs certain updates to be installed first, before it installs correct
