windows server backup schedule keeps disappearing in SBS 2011

windows server backup schedule keeps disappearing in SBS 2011

I have a server running SBS 2011.
I have backup assist performing daily backups of all user data as well as exchange database and taking the data off site using rsync.

I have windows server backup configured to do a full image backup of the server to a dedicated internal hard drive - this way we have offsite backups as well as a full local image backup just for convenient restores.

For some reason, each time I set up windows server backup schedule, it runs for a few days and then the schedule disappears and in the windows server backup console it reports that no backups are scheduled.

I cant understand what could be causing this.

Any ideas?

Did you setup your Windows Server Backup to do VSS copies rather than full backup? (Normally have to do this via a script rather than using the backup console).

Having two backup solutions backing up the same data can cause problems as both will be looking at the archive bit which tells the backup what was previously backed up.

I suspect windows server backup is having trouble finding out what was backed up previously due to the other backup solution changing the archive bit. It may be that because of this it removes the schedule believing another backup solution is already doing the backups.

It would also be worth checking your event logs for any issues with the backups - this may point to a conflict or error that causes the schedule to be deleted.

OK, firstly, with the windows backup I am doing a VSS copy.
And with backup assist I am doing a full backup.

I was originally using a script to back up, but it kept failing. Its strange because I do have other clients that are using the same method (backup assist of remote backups and windows backup for local).

OK fair point about the archive bit, I am not sure if backup assist uses that when doing rsync backups, but I will do some tests on that theory and come back.

think I have got to the issue -
Backup assist has an entry in task scheduler for its backup, so its obviously using the windows backup engine to perform the backup of exchange.
When I set windows backup schedule, it is overwriting that entry.

So I imagine that at some point, backup assist is overwriting the entry again itself, causing windows backup schedule to become unset.

Strange because in the other setup the two are working alongside each other without issue.

I have posted on backupassist forums here:http://www.backupassist.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=7751&p=17818#p17818

See what they say.

sorted - it was a third party program (backup assist) that was cancelling the job. When I turned off SBS backup reporting integration in backup assist it sorted the problem.

found the answer myself.

Windows security Update KB3046269 successful but continues to flag to install

We have a client which has 2 x machines which continue to flag the same update for install despite showing it has installed successfully. The machines are running WIndows 7 Ultimate SP1. The update is shown below:
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3046269)

I have run the Windows update readiness tool/fix which flagged and resolved a couple of errors. And checked through the event viewer which shows the error attached in the screenshot.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

You may want to try gpupate /force and /boot

This should apply update on the client machines.

From your screenshot, it looks like the hotfix is trying to install from a mapped drive, "M:Windows6.1-KB3046269-x64.msu."

So, I would try copying that file to a local folder on each PC & then run it again.

Folder redirection and issue (language)

Folder redirection and issue (language)

Hey

We have a GPO with Folder redirection.

Example:
Downloads -> \mysrvhomedrives%username%Downloads
Favorites -> \mysrvhomedrives%username%Favorites
Documents-> \mysrvhomedrives%username%Documents

When our users logon to a Danish computer the see:
H:Overførsler (download in danish)
H:Favoriter (favorites in danish)
H:Documents (in english)

Why does "documents" not get translated into danish? (junction)

Thanks in advance

Mike

Check within each folder mention above, there should be a file called desktop.ini (Hidden system file). Usually, when folder redirection applies, desktop.ini within each folder is customised with the name of the folder. You will usually see the below section:
[DeleteOnCopy]
Owner=User's Name
Personalized=5
PersonalizedName=My Documents

This affects what name the folder appears to have in windows explorer, regardless of the folder's actual name. I'm not 100% on this but it's possible that depending on region, these strings are replaced with localised versions. It may just be that your user's docs folders are missing the above section in their documents folder desktop.ini and explorer is therefore just showing the actual folder name.

Is this a DC or member server?

I would create a new server name and use a different ip address.

Then you can run then side by side.

Trying to keep same name and ip address can have issues.

Shares and letters

Shares and letters

Hi Experts,

in our company we use a lot of shares for our users.
All shares a added to a letter with a GPO.
But we have too much shares, more than letters available.
Some letters are given several times but with different security settings.
I wonder how bigger companies are doing this, is there any other way to handle shares with letters ?

Hello
A good solution on that is to enable Access Based Enumeration and DFS (optional, regarding to your needs)

Is there a way to disable this IE message:

click 'choose add-ons' a box will appear to select/deselect and it won't ask you again afterwards

Next time this appears I'll give it a try. Thanks

It maybe a little more complicated than that.
Here are three more ways
http://www.askvg.com/how-to-disable-speed-up-browsing-by-disabling-add-ons-popup-notification-message-in-internet-explorer/
Method #1 is what Seth Simmon suggested. Do you get the window with "Tell me when the delay caused by add-ons exceeds"? If so you should set the delay to 10 seconds and then click Done.

I do not get this message any more and so cannot see whether this info is valid in IE11.

Thanks - I'll follow-up with results when this happens the next with your suggestions also,

Devices and Printers hangs when opened

Devices and Printers hangs when opened

If Devices and Printers is open, a green bar moves showing progress from the left and almost moved completely to the right and then stops. The devices and printers do not show.

Try running System File Checker as the first suggestion. Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator and run SFC /SCANNOW. Allow to complete, shut down, start back up and test.

Please let us know. The next thing (if this does not work) is a Windows Seven Repair install. For this, you need a working recovery partition or the Windows 7 DVD. Here is a Seven Forums Tutorial to assist.

There are several things that can cause this issue, I think.

--This can be an issue related to a hanging device so try unplugging one device at a time and see if it comes up then.
--This can be an issue with the shortcut so try running this from a command prompt: control /name Microsoft.DevicesAndPrinters
--This can be an issue with your firewall or anti-virus so turn them off and then try again.
--Like John said, this can be related a corrupted file that the devices and printers applet needs so run system file checker.

I would start with those basically in that order and see what happens.

any errors in device manager, or event viewer?

Tried SFC /SCANNOW and no errors found.
Would have to look for the Windows 7 DVD. Skip for now.
Only device attached is Wireless NIC WG111T.
Tried command prompt: control /name Microsoft.DevicesAndPrinters. Same results as opening Devices and Printers.
To disable Microsoft Security Essentials, I have to reboot the computer. Skip for now
Device manager show the following problems:
Officejet 6000 E609n
PCI Serial Port
PCI Simple Communications Controller.

Event Viewer does show Event 100 Bonjour Service Task Scheduling Error: m-> NextScheduledSPRetry 31247
Event 7011 A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for the Spooler service.

Bonjour is Apple and (in a normal system) will not cause Devices and Printers to hang, You probably need to try Windows Repair install when you find the DVD

Windows search service

Windows search service

I have a windows 2008 R2 file server with hundreds of thousands of files. My workstations are windows 7 - 64 Bit. The windows 7 search only searches the file names, not the contents like it did with Good Old Windows xp. I read somewhere that I need to install Windows Search Service on Windows 2008, and I did. I am still getting the same results in searching the files, only the file name is searched.

What do I need to do to be able to search the file name, content, advanced find like the GOW and doing it fast.

Thanks for all your help on this.

Bill

You can use external software like "Windows grep" - http://www.wingrep.com/

Why Windows 8.1 audio not working

Why Windows 8.1 audio not working

I have a audio driver that works - sort of. It has been working fine in the past, but for reasons unknown, at present, when I use the driver it works, but then after a few minutes it stops working.

That is, I enable it in the Playback tab of Windows Sounds and test it. It tests fine. I move to a web site and play something that requires sound and it plays fine. I move somewhere that requires sound, and then it just quits working. Bottom line: I use it for a couple of minutes and then it stops working. Go figure! It is a driver for an older device (Panasonic Musical Instrument), but the driver has always worked well in the past.

Anyone have any idea why this might be happening.

check the power setting for the device -it may be turning off to save power
look in control panel - power options

@Nobus

Thank you for your input and help. I did two things, one of which has apparently solved the problem. Not sure which. As you suggested,

I went into Advanced Power Settings and in USB settings, USB Selective Suspend Setting, I changed the setting from Enabled to Disabled. The audio Device is external and plugs into a USB port.

The second thing I did was to change the Multimedia Settings. That is, I selected Mulfimedia Settings, When Sharing media and changed it from "Allow computer to sleep" to "Prevent Idling to sleep."

As I said, since doing the above the problem has not manifested itself. Apparently my setting somehow got changed, I'm not sure how.

you can always set 1 of these back as it was for checking if the problem arises
i would try the sleep setting first

RDS 2012 Session Host Farm

Hi,

I am in the process of configuring a Windows 2012 RDS Session Host farm. I have deployed my session host servers and created a collection which contains all session host servers.

Maybe a daft question, but what do I point my RDP client to to access the remote desktops?

Do I point it at the connection broker server name or should/can I use DNS round robin to achieve this?

connection broker server name should perform the job.

The Subject fields indicate the account on the local system which requested the logon. This is most commonly a service such as the Server service, or a local process such as Winlogon.exe or Services.exe.

The Logon Type field indicates the kind of logon that was requested. The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network).

The Process Information fields indicate which account and process on the system requested the logon.

The Network Information fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases.

The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request.
- Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request.
- Package name indicates which sub-protocol was used among the NTLM protocols.
- Key length indicates the length of the generated session key. This will be 0 if no session key was requested.

Windows Permissions New Folders and Files inherritence propogation

Windows Permissions New Folders and Files inherritence propogation

Hi,

I have a new Win2008R2 Standard 64X file server, this is on an AD domain.

I have an issue where a user is creating a new folder and a new file within this folder, it would seem the folder first and then the file after are not picking up the correct permissions.

A lot of these folders have custom NTFS permissions that differ from the top folder through to these levels.

For example I have.

-> = new folder

Top level folder Share - Everyone Access -> Team Folder(inherit unchecked, team security group added full control with propogation) -> Usersfolder(inherit ticked) -> User is creating new folder here - User is creating new file here.

The problem looks like when the user is creating the new folder the folder is set to inherit by default but it inherits to "This folder only" It does not inherit to "All Subfolders and Files", which is weird because the folder that the new folder is inheriting its permissions from has the permission to apply to "All Subfolders and Files". When the user creates the new file the NTFS permissions again do not inherit the user is permissioned on the NTFS ACL and the the Administrators group of the file server.

This is a bit of a problem for me, Any ideas?

I need people to be able to create new files with the files inheriting what is actually above , not inheriting permissions to this folder only.

Interesting problem. Is CREATOR OWNER listed in the NTFS permissions with the inheritance set to Subfolders only?

Can you post a screenshot of the Advanced Security Settings of the Users folder?

Right click on the Users folder > Properties > Security tab > Advanced button > screenshot the Permissions tab in this window.

Sorry but im not posting a screenshot because I will have to edit out some sensitive info.

Also because I believe your barking up the wrong tree with this. There are two things in the advanced security permissions. Domain admins sec group and a staff sec group nothing else.

I may have found the problem, I now have the user being able to create files and folders with the permissions automatically inherited.

-------

Top level folder Share - Everyone Access -> Team Folder(inherit unchecked, team security group added full control with propogation) -> Usersfolder(inherit not ticked) -> User is creating new folder here - User is creating new file here.

------

I went to the usersfolder level above, properites advanced, removed the inheritable permissions and blanked all the permissions. I readded the two security groups mentioned above, this time I DID NOT TICK the following box whilst adding the security groups in advanced permissions "Apply these changes to objects and/or containers in this folder only" I also ticked the replace permissions on child objects box and I kept inheritable permissions from above unticked too. I applied and pushed the permissions down.

Then I got the new user to create test folders and files and they seem to be working now and inheriting the correct permissions from the folder above.

"Apply these changes to objects and/or containers in this folder only"

Confirmed this check box being unticked at the top level for this set of permissions and applied through to all child objects resolved this one. What I did in full was.
1. Went to the top level I wanted these permissions to apply from within the share. Did a takeown.exe /f /a /r on this folder. Then went to properties advanced permissions, (I) unticked inheritable (ii) removed anything else in the access list (iii) added the security groups I wanted to have permission and assigned full control on the permissions box but made sure that "Apply these changes to objects and/or containers in this folder only" checkbox was unticked. (iv) ticked replace permissions on child objects and applied. These steps very very quickly and easily reset all files and subfolders in a matter of seconds.

"Apply these changes to objects and/or containers in this folder only" Can anyone clarify what this box is supposed to do.

I believe this box sets the inherited permission to this folder only which basically locks everything out.

Sorry, but why do you think I was barking up the wrong tree? A screenshot of the Advanced Permissions on the problem root folder would have said a lot.

Either way, glad you were able to solve your own question. It's always good when you figure out the issue yourself!

As for what the Apply these changes to objects and/or containers in this folder only setting actually does, have a look at this article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-au/library/cc776140%28v=ws.10%29.aspx

The table in the article should be able to answer your question.

Firefox Bookmarks Sync question

Firefox Bookmarks Sync question

I currently have three laptops connected on a home network and all three use Firefox. At one time I sync the computers and all three show the same bookmarks. Problem is one is used by my son which has no interest in my bookmarks and would rather have his own. Is there a way to UN-SYNC his computer so that he can have his own bookmarks?

Yep, you need to remove your Son's PC from the devices Firefox is setup to sync:
At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button and then select Options. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Tools menu and then select Options. On the menu bar, click on the Firefox menu and select Preferences....At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Edit menu and select Preferences.

Click the menu button and choose Options.Preferences.

Go to the Sync panel and click on Unlink This Device. A prompt will appear.

Click Unlink to confirm. Your device's data will no longer be synced with the server's Sync data and you'll be logged out of your Sync account.

You can also manage the sync options so it doesn't sync bookmarks and continues to sync add-ons for example. It's under Tools->Options->Sync

Just create another account for your son. Syncing is done based on the account you setup. You can create as many accounts as you want.

That worked out well. Thanks

people,

How can I perform the version upgrade of Windows server 2008 R2 standard to enterprise without losing hardware configuration (SAN HBA) and software settings ... Etc.

Very straight forward process with dism built-in utility

Open elevated command prompt:Run:
DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEdition - this would tell you current edition

DISM /Online /Get-TargetEditions - find out available target editions

DISM /Online /Set-Edition:ServerEnterprise /ProductKey:xxxxxx where type your enterprise key and it will ask you one reboot to complete upgrade
This is safe and without any loss problems

Cool, so what about the HBA and the FC connection should I disconnect them to keep the data on the LUNs safe ?

Or no need ?
I've never done this before and worried if the settings or the application configured in this server could be broken.

Ok does the System State backup is enough to take for roll back plan ?

Windows Server 2008 R2 includes a command-line tool called the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool, or DISM. It's functionally equivalent to the Windows Anytime Upgrade feature in client versions of Windows. You can run it from an elevated command prompt.

To determine the currently installed edition:
DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition
To determine the editions you can upgrade to:
DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions
To actually perform an upgrade:
DISM /online /Set-Edition: /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Actually no need to disconnect any thing, you are not uninstalling any server roles, you are just changing editions

For safer side, you may disconnect LUNS if wanted to

1) What exactly do you request to make sure they don't do a file based copy? Do you request a copy of the VMDK and associated files?

2) Also, my understanding they don't have any specific backup tools for VM backup (i.e they use normal commuvault). Can they do this with a regular windows file copy or ESXi host?

3) Do I need to shutdown the windows 2008 server or machine before they do the VM backup?

Ask them to do this at least....

Do not ASK for a Snapshot, that is not a backup!

I do not know what Backup System you have, but if my Client came to me, and advised them were doing an upgrade of the VM, I would ensure, I have a a DR Copy of the VM available to be restore, which was taken, seconds before the VM was upgraded....

You should be using a Virutal AWARE backup product, so ask for a Block Copy of the VM, and ASK them how quickly it can be restore the answer, should be 5-10 minutes if it's a block copy. (which is the VMDK and associated files!).

Commvault is VMware VM aware!

No shutdown of the VM is required.!

Why don't you test them.....ask for a backup, and then tell them it all went wrong, how long does a restore take!

i did that and the ticket is over 1 year old and nothing yet. they want to test restore system from file based backup!

I think their problem with commuvault VM backup is that it does entrie VM insteasd of daily incrementals. that will use a lot of disk storage. Maybe they dont know how to configure it though.

what is virtual aware backup product - not sure if they have it. Can they use windows file copy to copy the vmdk and associagted file? is thi reliable for recovery.

In that case, ask them to follow my EE Article of Exporting the VM, if that is the only backup system you have got!

Can they use windows file copy to copy the vmdk and associagted file? is thi reliable for recovery.

No. See my EE Article.

I read your link above.

Are you saying they should use ESXi host 5.1 to do a export to OVF backup file that will have these 3 files?

My First Windows VM.mf
My First Windows VM.ovf
My First Windows VM.vmdk

I think they might be using ESXi 5.0 but i will have to confirm.

Are you sure a windows file copy for vmdk and other files will not work for recovery?
One of the guys did it this way before but I never tested it.

Thank you

No that article was just written and 5.1 was the example ESXi used!

If that's all they can offer - yes - better than nothing!

ESXi 4.x, 5.x all the same they have the same function!

if you've got the vmdk files, that will also work, but Export to OVF is easier, than manually copying files and folders!

It's easier for them, to use Export to OVF, but if they've want to mess with files, and mangle them up!

System Restore Points not working

System Restore Points not working

I am working with a computer that is actually working fine but we have a System Restore point mystery. The computer had about 20 restore points but none of them worked. If a new restore point is made it works. However if you try to use it the next day it won't work.

I also notice that when I select an earlier restore point to restore to (for ex, I try to restore computer to some point yesterday), as SR goes thru its processing just before shutdown, I get the usual (?) message "SR is closing some temp files". If I get that message, all works fine. If I don't get that message, the restore fails.

Any ideas?

There could be a few reasons:
First reason: Not enough space is allocated and restore points are getting lost to limited restore space.

There are too many temp files. Run Disk Cleanup (Admin Tools) and select most of the options for deletion.

The computer has a virus. Scan with your own Anti Virus software and then with Malwarebytes.

You could also try running System File Checker. Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator and run SFC /SCANNOW. Allow to complete, shut down, start up and test.

If none of the above helps, try a Repair Install.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html
This should not affect personal data or installed programs, but a backup first is always a good idea.

Hi John - I'll check the space allocated, temp files were cleared recently but will clear again, computer had already been scanned for viruses...minor PUPs had been found and removed and sfc /scannow was run with no integrity violations.

Hey jcimarron - System Repair discs were created...need to see if Windows disc is available as well. System Repair was my next move but you feel Repair Install is the best choice?

I'll keep you posted.
Thanks,
Mags

If you can do a Repair Install (need working recovery partition or the Windows 7 DVD) is probably about the same as a System Repair if that works.

check event viewer for errors also - it may indicate what went wrong

I need configure only three records for a public domain

I need configure only three records for a public domain

Hello I have a domain with a dns server.

I have a public domain configured in the DNS, I only need three A records.

My problem is that need that some internet DNS solve the rest of the ask for the domain.

In other words, I need thar and internet DNS solve the domains except three records.

It's posible?

I have no idea what your question is?

In any case, if you have a domain, you probably have a DNS configuration panel where you can input your own DNS entries. Ask this information from where you registered your domain. Even if they don't have a configuration panel for you ready, they will help you enter these information if you request it.

I think you mean partial DNS records to be locally resolved, and other to be externally resolved is this correct?

FarWest.

Yes I need resolve only three A record. The rest I need to be resolved in a public DNS. I can do it with host files but I want to know if I can do it in the DNS local server.

Thanks.

Yes this is called Split DNS

how to limit the # of connections per IP address in IIS

how to limit the # of connections per IP address in IIS

I'm running windows server 2012 R2. Looks like someone attempted to hack us, as we had over 3800 https requests in a few minutes on our webserver, which crashed our server. The 3800 requests all came from 4 different IP addresses in a few minutes time.

Is there a way in IIS to limit the total number of connections per IP address?
Basically, I want to stop what just occurred this morning from happening in the future.

I came across this, but this limits the total connections for the server, there's no option for limiting connections by IP address.
http://www.iis.net/configreference/system.applicationhost/sites/site/limits

I don't want to limit the total connections for the server because then I can be limiting legit traffic.

During this time, my SQL server was running at 99%, so it stopped everything.

Any thoughts how to solve this issue?

You can enable the IP and Domain Restrictions feature within IIS in Server 2012 R2 to dynamically block IPs that exceed a specified number of requests. See the steps in this article to install and configure this feature on your server: http://www.iis.net/learn/get-started/whats-new-in-iis-8/iis-80-dynamic-ip-address-restrictions

Do you know what the requests were trying to access? It sounds like it was an attempt to do something malicious. There's an open source Host Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS) called OSSEC:
http://www.ossec.net/

You can set it to blacklist an IP address that attempts to do something bad. For example, if the same IP address tries to log onto your server as Administrator 10 times in 2 minutes, then that IP can be blocked for good, or for, say, 10 minutes. It will also alert you via e-mail about activity that it detects.

Thanks guys, I came across the IIS IP and domain restrictions plugin a few minutes before you made the post, but thank you.

In regards to the OSSEC, looks like it's not available anymore on windows. I'm running windows servers.
Plus, the website says they don't have a compiler for windows anymore.

Vmware host only network with different subnet

Vmware host only network with different subnet

I would like to have a communication between 2 VMs in VMware. I am running VMWare11
VM1 192.168.1.0 network IP.192.168.1.10
VM2 192.168.1.0 network IP.192.168.1.11
VM3 192.168.2.0 network IP.192.168.2.10
VM4 192.168.2.0 network IP.192.168.2.11

How to have connection between these VMs with out a layer3 hardware?

Your guidance is apprecaiated
Thanks

Since they seem to be on a different subnet you cannot make them communicate with eachother without either using routing or expanding the subnet to 255.255.0.0 (or similar)...

Have you thought about using something a small software virtual router? Something like FREESCO

I have seen this FREESCO
but I could not setup as a VM
Even I could not login as I am not sure about default username and password
I tried below passwords
admin admin
admin vmware

The user name and password should be following, but just for the ovf one mentioned in the link below:
Username: Admin Password: vmware
And for the shell login: Root/vmware

There should be an ovf downloadable here, this way you can deploy it ready for configuration.

Many thanks for the URL
I imported teh OVA and logged in to the Freesco shell.
Now how to make connectivity between these VMs?

For configuration you can find some more info here

But basically you configure the first network as gateway (e.g 192.168.1.1) for the first subnet IP.192.168.1.10, then create a second network for 192.168.2.x ... With as gateway 192.168.2.1 for example.

Old games for Windows 8 that are NOT full screen?

Old games for Windows 8 that are NOT full screen?

I have a older lady, set in her ways. She has a new Windows 8 computer and wants the old Windows 7 games. From what I see so far it's suggested to download games from the Windows store. The problem here is they all seem to be "full Screen" and she won't be able to get around in full screen.

Is there a way to install the old games on Windows 8 so they don't run in full screen ?

Thank You.

You would need to look around for such games. There are a few. None have pushed me to download or purchase, so I just use the Metro games. Here is one such link

Unfortunately, the answer is likely going to be use different games or wait for windows 9 which I *think* I read would be able to run Modern UI apps in windows. If she still has the old windows 7 it may be possible to simple copy the executable and run it, though I'm not sure of the licensing implications.

There are some games similar to the solitaire games of previous Windows that come as portable apps, which itself is a super tool and free:
http://portableapps.com

It is possible to port Win 7 games to Win 8.x, and they will work windowed, however as Win 8.x version checks them at launch they would all need patching to work (and x86/x64 patches would be different), leew is correct about the licensing issue, particularly with Chess Titans where the licence to distribute was withdrawn by the publishers (Oberon Games) from Microsoft after Windows 7 was launched and so was never intended to be used in Win 8.x.

Lee is also correct that Win 9 will allow the included games to run windowed (this might just be included in a forthcoming presentation this week ;))

John's suggestion to use the free Metro downloads from the Windows Store is certainly the simplest and will cover all the solitaire games plus Minesweeper and Hearts.

I guess a lot will depend on what your customer is missing.

One option is to use the program ModernMix to run the Windows Store apps in windows instead of Full Screen. It costs $5:http://www.stardock.com/products/modernmix/

is there a way the computer can keep the same password

On the computer you wish to controlremotely, open Teamviewer and select Extras and then Options.
Select the Security tab and change the password under ‘Permanent Password for Unattended access’.
You can now get a permanent ID by setting up permanent access from the Home Screen.
Doing this generates a new password, but the permanent password which we created before still works because it remains an alias.
By default, the password is set to 4 digits, but you may change this by clicking on the Password strength dropdown menu.

Pop3 server on Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter

Pop3 server on Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter

I am migrating from windows server 2003 to Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter edition.
On my 2003 server I was using POP3 mail server. Now it appears that Server 2012 doesn't support POP3. Is this true and if so what are my options? I have been trying to configure 2012 for exchange server but I can't seem to figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Windows 2012 server does not have build in POP3 and SMTP service as windows 2003 server did.

One option is to use exchange server, which requires you to buy all needed licenses. This is a really full featured product which has certain system requirements.
Installation procedure:https://judeperera.wordpress.com/2012/07/19/step-by-step-guide-for-installing-exchange-server-2013-preview/

Or you can use some of free POP3/SMTP programs like:https://grantnl.wordpress.com/2012/12/11/posted-in-uncategorized-leave-a-replyedit-installing-imap-and-pop3-servers-with-windows-server-2012/

It really depends on your needs.

How safe is that hmail one?

That is a little difficult to say. I'm not familiar with it. Never used.
But on the homepage they are saying: "It's used by Internet service providers, companies, governments, schools and enthusiasts in all parts of the world."
And being a small simple program also attack surface is smaller.

I used it and it seems to be working.

DNS not accurate

DNS not accurate

We are running a windows 2008R2 domain environment. i am running into a problem where clients that have two records in DNS (one for wireless and one for ethernet) are failing to update. What happens is when a laptop is connected to both wireless and ethernet then the ethernet is disconnected, the record in DNS for the ethernet connection doesnt go away. This causes server initiated connections to the client to periodically fail as the server (in this case our SCCM 2012r2 server) tries to connect to the ethernet interface which is disconnected.

If I manually delete the record for the client ethernet connection, everything starts working.

Please help!

The primary purpose of DNS is to allow clients to find servers; it is not designed to be a real-time map of your network.

I think you're going to need to create some scripts that periodically remove duplicate entries and force workstations to re-register with DNS.

DNS entries get removed based on the DHCP lease and also when the DNS scavenging task is set to as well.

Unfortunately there is really no way around this (that i can think of) other than having your laptop users only use wireless (which probably will not fly).

Will.

why do you need to activate both wireless and ethernet at the same time?

That's a pretty common setup. Makes it easy to dock and undock.

Otherwise you have to do some magic to disable the wireless when docked....

Most folks manage it by leaving both connections enabled all the time, but having the default route for the wired connection have a lower metric than the default route for the wireless.

That leaves you with two DNS entries, though, as both connections register with DNS. Both connections work when docked, too. When you undock, though, the wired connection is no longer available but the DNS entry is still there.

I suppose one option would be to uncheck the "register this connection with DNS" for the wired connection. Then SCCM finds the device via the wireless address.

create a batch file from notepad, ipconfig /flushdns to run daily at 8am on the server and maybe noon. Do so on startup on the laptops. I've run the command and it's cleared up the wireless issue you're talking about.

I also explain to users that operating systems CPU's where most wireless resinates from now and even wireless cards in older laptops often utilize the faster of the two networks. However this isn't always the case and the majority of time the LAN wired network is faster. I explain that it's best for them to disable the wireless while connected in a docking station. 99% of the time it's a simple function key / tab combination. A little user training never hurt anyone :-)

SCCM 2007 OSD defaults to D drive

SCCM 2007 OSD defaults to D drive

Hi,

For some reason my OSD Win 7 deployments are defaulting to D drive. This has just start to happen...? It was always default to the C drive.

I have tried adding OSDPreserveDriveLetter vaule FALSE and it still installed on the D drive. I also tried select the location where you wan to apply this operating system destination Specific logical drive letter C drive and it installed on the D drive.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks!

Try these

Method 1: Configure The Format And Partition Disk Task To Properly Assign Drive Letters

In this method, the Format and Partition Disk task is used to control what drive letters the partitions are assigned. Using this method will ensure that the OS partition receives a drive letter of C: while in WinPE. OSDPreserveDriveLetter will then be set to False so that after the Task Sequence reboots out of WinPE, the Windows partition ends up with the drive letter of C:

Method 2: Use WinPEshl.ini To Reassign Drive Letters Before The Task Sequence Begins

As explained in the Cause section, the problem can happen when a partition before the OS partition is assigned a drive letter before the OS partition is assigned a drive letter. This is a common scenario with Windows 7 and newer because the default configuration in Windows 7 and newer is to have a "System Reserved" partition (which is basically the boot partition) followed by the OS partition. Assigning of drive letters to these partitions is handled by WinPE when it first boots up. It normally assigns the System Reserved partition a drive letter of C: and the OS partition a drive letter of D:. After WinPE has assigned the drive letters, it processes a file called WinPEshl.ini. Any commands in the WinPEshl.ini file are then automatically ran.

Method 3: Force The New Windows OS To Reevaluate Drive Letters

Normally ConfigMgr determines what drive letters are assigned to each partition during the WinPE phase of the Task Sequence. However when deploying Windows outside of a ConfigMgr task sequence, Windows Setup determines the drive letters assigned to each partition. When allowing Windows to determine the drive letters, it will always assign the OS partition a drive letter of C:.

Instead of allowing ConfigMgr to determine the drive letters, the default behavior of allowing Windows to determine the drive letters can be used instead. This can be accomplished by deleting the registry entries that determine the drive letters as created by ConfigMgr.

I would assume that you have just started to use some new hardware that you are imaging with your Windows 7 OSD? My guess, from experience in this and similar errors, is that the new hardware comes pre-configured with a small system partition. Your format & partition step is not removing this, and so is then deploying to the next drive it can, the D drive.

Check your format step to ensure it is correctly configured, as I believe that is where the cause of your error sits.

The below method worked.

help me to write a windows batch script?

Hi All,

I need to write a small batch script in windows 7 ... which in turn call a shell script in the linux server please...please help me to do achieve this scenario ?

Besides that i know the static IP address of the linux server ... i.e. 54.191.74.256

your best bet is going to be to download a command line ssh client for windows: http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/download/

Once it's installed, you can create a batch file to run ssh in
Program Files (x86)OpenSSHbinssh

you can run commands via SSH from the windows command line. Keep in mind that if you don't put the path to SSH in your path environment variable, you will need to include the entire path in the command for the batch file:

Use putty and define a profile for your linux server, set on "Connection"->"SSH"->"Remote command" the path to your shell script.

Then call, from command prompt or a desktop shortcut
x:pathtoputty.exe -load sessionname

PS: I would advise you use a certificate to authenticate to your ssh server.

HTH,
Dan

Thank you

Background color won't work in Excel

Background color won't work in Excel

Hi, I just tried to use the feature of highlighting the background in a couple of words in Excel and when I go to the top and select the icon, it's grayed out and won't give me the color selection to choose from. However, if I select the entire cell, it will allow me to highlight it. I use to be able to do this in Windows XP, can you not do it on Windows 7?
Thanks

Are you trying to highlight only a portion of the text in a cell? If so, I don't think you can do that. The options I know of would be to change the font color of the selected bit of text, or change the entire cell background.

If you're trying to change the entire cell background, you need to select the cell and then use the Fill Color dropdown. If you've only selected a part of the text, then the Fill Color dropdown will be grayed out.

unless my memory is failing me, you could never change the background colour on individual words in 2003.

You could (and still can) change the colour of the font itself, bold, italic, etc, but not the background of specific words... Got a pc still running 2003 at work, can check tomorrow?

Yeah, maybe my memory is failing. That is what I'm trying to do, i.e. change a couple of words in the text and not the entire cell. Please confirm and let me know. Thanks

I did not intend on awarding myself any points.

KMS server redundancy and migration

KMS server redundancy and migration

People,

I've got physical KMS server running on Windows Server 2012, what if the server is failed and cannot be brought up during the software updates ? does my whole Windows OS becoming inactive / not activated ?

Is there any way to provide some sort of redundancy for the KMS server ?

Thanks.

The way KMS activation works is that every 180 days the client must authenticate with the server to remain activated. By default it will try every 7 days.. You can have several kms servers and they don't have to be on 'SERVER' s

ok, so in this case I only have one physical server running as KMS, can I set one more on the existing WSUS VM ?

if for some reason the KMS primary server is down for more than 7 days, what happened to the Tier-1 business servers like Exchange, SQL and SharePoint servers OS (Win 2008 R2 and 2012 R2) ?

Notrhing will happen for 170+ days they will remain activated. A client machine can be a kms server About all you need to do is change the AD/DNS records.

Ah that sounds simple. So no need to provide high redundancy on this KMS server.

Hello,
What is the quickest way to get WSUS up and running on a SBS2011 (Windows 2008 r2) server? I can no longer synchronize and get updates. Too many errors.

How to know what files or folders of Windows has been shared or given

How to know what files or folders of Windows has been shared or given access to and what username

Is there a way to know what files/folders has been given access to from our hard drive?

Also how can we know what username or group it was given to?

We know we can right-click a File/Folder, go to Properties, click on Security and there we can see if its shared and who access it. Since we don't know which File/Folders, is there a more wider way to see this & go one-by-one?

Ok, thanx! here it is...

Indeed Sysinternal has tool for it too such as AccessChk (e.g. know what kind of accesses specific users or groups have to resources including files, directories, Registry keys, global objects and Windows services): http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb664922

This tool is great it tells us what files or folders of Windows has been shared or given access to.

Hi,

If you are using WIndows 2008/2012, you can found all share of your server on this console " Share and Storage Management Console".

Where is located?

On administratives tools

'net share' from a command prompt will show you the shares on the current server.

Net share doesn't display all files/folders and since we have Windows 8, we used Computer Management and found the folder shared.

But neither tells me the users who have been given access to these files/folders.

Is there a way I can find out "All Programs" installed on a specific
machine?

Is there a way I can find out "All Programs" installed on a specific machine?

I know I can always do a UNC path and check the Programs Files folder on a computer, but I want to get detailed information. For example, if I want to find out what version of Java a computer is running, the UNC path with not give me full details as what is usually listed or shown in "Programs and Feature" like how it is shown in Control Panel.

Try Sumo http://www.kcsoftwares.com/?sumo or Secunia PSI http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/

These are more for checking for software updates but they do show applications plus versions. Neither does everything but between the two of them they do a lot.

Also look at File Hippos UDC http://www.filehippo.com/download_app_manager for a third. It picks up freeware better than the others.

You may try Sysinternals PSinfo: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897550

Installation

Just copy PsInfo onto your executable path, and type "psinfo".

Using PsInfo

By default PsInfo shows information for the local system. Specify a remote computer name to obtain information from the remote system. Since PsInfo relies on remote Registry access to obtain its data, the remote system must be running the Remote Registry service and the account from which you run PsInfo must have access to the HKLMSystem portion of the remote Registry.

In order to aid in automated Service Pack updates, PsInfo returns as a value the Service Pack number of system (e.g. 0 for no service pack, 1 for SP 1, etc).

Usage: psinfo [[\computer[,computer[,..] | @file [-u user
[-p psswd]]] [-h] [-s] [-d] [-c [-t delimiter]] [filter]

\computer Perform the command on the remote computer or computers specified. If you omit the computer name the command runs on the local system, and if you specify a wildcard (\*), the command runs on all computers in the current domain.
@file Run the command on each computer listed in the text file specified.
-u Specifies optional user name for login to remote computer.
-p Specifies optional password for user name. If you omit this you will be prompted to enter a hidden password.
-h Show list of installed hotfixes.
-s Show list of installed applications.
-d Show disk volume information.
-c Print in CSV format.
-t The default delimiter for the -c option is a comma, but can be overriden with the specified character.
filter Psinfo will only show data for the field matching the filter. e.g. "psinfo service" lists only the service pack field.

Sample command: PSinfo -s \computername

Another one you can try is Belarc Advisor. It gives a lot of information about what's installed but also does an assessment of your computer for other things such as security patches etc.

If this is a business network, manageengine desktop central is something I use and works really well. I believe there might be a free trial and it allows you to get very comprehensive inventories.

So I found out that GFI LanGuard, which we use for patch management can also do software inventory as well. However, when I try to deploy software to certain systems, it fails.

What are ways that I can install Java and Adobe flash player via back end to a system to a via remote? I do not want to use any third party tool.

GPO Excluding computers from interactive logon

GPO Excluding computers from interactive logon

i have a GPO that impacts all computers with specific policies and i need to exclude 2 computers from the interactive logon to where it shows no disclaimer.

can someone help and give me the next steps?

i believe i have to create a separate GPO and exclude the computers but the default setting of that interactive logon is set to off. i also need the other items from the original GPO to apply to these 2 servers.

thanks guys

Just create new OU and move those two users you want to exclude. Now in GPO select the OU and right click and block inheritance will serve the purpose.

Hey guys,
I'm looking for a highly effective and easy to use imaging software for windows xp to restore to dissimilar hardware. What do you recommend??

Michael have you used it? Will I need to preload drivers? Do I need to make a boot CD?

Have a look on this article: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Backup_Restore/A_2569-Migration-to-dissimilar-hardware-How-to-migrate-to-new-hardware-without-OS-reinstallation.html
I used it personally and you need to have drivers ready to install them under WinPE through P2P Wizard.

I need something that is rock solid where I won't need drivers.

Remote Desktop - Access is denied

Remote Desktop - Access is denied

Hello,

?

We are running a Windows 2008 R2 server that handes Remote Desktop services.

?

This is 2 part question.

?
1.Logged in as Administrtor, I've noted that I am unable to remotely control some sessions. I do not see anything diffe??rent about these sessions. When I try to connect, I receive the error: Remote Desktop Services Manager | Access is denied.
2.The second part of the question is....I've got a manager who would like to assist/train some of the users and would like to shadow their sessions. How do I grant this access without granting full admin level access?

Thanks in advance.

?

what os you are using ! let me know thr is hotfix

Im on my cell and dont have the exact steps and menu names handy, but:
[1]
You need to enable Remote Control of the User account in AD to allow someone to view the session. Then choose to allow Remote Control to occur with or without User approval. I recommend without if you have the choice. You won't be able to view if this is not enabled.

[2]
On the RDS server you could try making the "Shadow" User a separate local admin account. Provide him a pre-created RDP icon that already has the username and password saved (but masked). When he logs into the RDS as the local admin he would be able to Task Manager and see the Users tab. Within that tab he could possibly R-Click the User and Remote Control.

I have not tested it but that is what I would try.

Windows XP - Can I have a user without a password and have that system
secure in public network?

Windows XP - Can I have a user without a password and have that system secure in public network?

I have an old Windows XP OS desktop I use for POP3 and SMTP email only
Is there a way I can keep a user with no password and yet keep the system secure?
What I mean is - Is it absolutely necessary that every Windows User must have a windows password? The default is no password. I am hoping that so long as I am not using
Remote Terminal or network shares on my Windows XP SP3 desktop that it will remain secure
I use this for my email almost soley and do not intend to be installing any network software other than the THE BAT by RITLABS.COM software so please let me know if this is a problem from a security standpoint. I am not talking about the Administrator just a single user and

perhaps there is a way to simply strip any remote access by a specific user and handle the issue that way?

Can you explain why you would not want a password for local users? Can you lock up the system in a secure area? Are you concerned that someone from the internet might access the system from outside if there is a local user with no password?

What is at stake if an untrusted person gains access to the system? If only some bits and bobs, then no matter. if the password to the vault that holds the recipe for digestive biscuits, then maybe.

I don't understand what having a password does that's objectionable.
A user can have a password and NEVER need to use it overtly.

The real issue with Windows XP is that it is becoming increasingly vulnerable. I don't think that passwords have much to do with that really. It remains to be seen what kinds of vulnerabilities emerge.

Is there a way I can keep a user with no password and yet keep the system secure?

NO. Dead simple to hack into.

Can I keep XP secure?

Not any more. operating system holes will never again be patched.

I'd be interested, and I'm sure you'd be interested in view of your question:
Under what conditions can a computer be hacked with or without a password?
I'm thinking that the computer is on a LAN / a private network and NOT on a public network.
I'm thinking that telnet is disabled (a common situation as it has to be overtly ENabled).
How to access then?

Clearly, no password is the ultimate of simple passwords. Yet, it is a password called [blank].
The question then really, is what is the hacking mechanism that simple passwords are vulnerable to on a private network without telnet?
I just don't know the answer so I ask.

Interesting response. I have a screen saver on the system and constantly need to access it physically so I know the importance of a password - What I trying to do here is not have one and feel safe from remote access
If Windows was set up properly this would never be an issue mainly no remote access via the network period then I could feel free not to have a password on one specific user I tend to use on the unit.

Microsoft does so little to protect us from malware and viruses it makes me sick but that being said
I would not mind making this machine only connectable via ports 110 and 25 and dirivitives of port 25 for my email servers.

My question would still be suppose I just want to not have to use a password on that one computer what does it take to make it safe without a password? This should not be impossible - I have seen CEOs with no password in their office so
some one must have a way to make it work - Ofcourse I would never do this in a publically available kiosk or office but a locked or private machine???
At the end of the day I am looking for a way to provide no password possibly because the user just does not want the hastle.
How many of you password protect your internet phone's - few people have the patience to login when a call comes through to my experience.

I get it normally passwords are vital essential even but this desktop will not be vulnerable that way if I can switch off all the remote login capabilities I think my machine should be reasonably safe and if it does get a virus or malware that password would have no bearing on damages by any virus as use of the device is guarenteed anyway.

Can anyone at least explain why Microsoft defaults to no password in the logins on home edition XP???

Frankly for the lazy user involved's sanity I would like better responses here. Stop the I must have a password speach please - This should very easily be doable and secure enough so long as no one can connect through a NAT class C connection and login remotely in any form via bios or therwise.
I should mention Administrator does have a password but why wouldn't I want the ability to not have to log in if my desktop is secured by a key.

I know biometric devices are a more costly way to provide a no password solution (actually there could be a password but the user need never use it) Just scan their finger

Can anyone show me an easy way to just shut off remote access of all kinds BIOS, TCP/IP etc..

Dropbox question

Dropbox question

Hi, I just gave one of my laptops to my son and it has a Dropbox account set up on it. He want's to set up his own Dropbox account. I tried doing that for him but when I go to Dropbox on the internet, it brings up a page with all of my stuff and doesn't give me a chance to create a different account. I deleted the Dropbox program and I set him up as Administrator but my name and/or account is still connected to Dropbox somehow.

How can I disconnect my account ONLY ON THIS COMPUTER, so that I can create a new one?
Thanks

You need to unlink it from that computer. There are two ways: on the computer, and on the website. I prefer the latter.

See https://www.dropbox.com/en/help/25 for more details.

Thanks for the link, but so far no help. You know, I remember seeing this box on my computer at one time but I have since uninstalled Dropbox and I can't re-install it because it immediately shows what is in my Dropbox. I tried going to the Dropbox website to see if I could find a way to unlink the computer but so far haven't been successful. Wish they wouldn't make it so har

Thank you - I finally got it to work

The backup operation that started at...has failed with following error

The backup operation that started at...has failed with following error code 0x8078014D...

I am having an IT "issue with legs", IE one that doesn't seem to want to die.

I have been trying to get two Windows Server 2012 Domain Controllers to do system state backups using the Windows Server Backup program to a network location. Though this works some of the time, it mostly doesn't. Here is some of the history on the issue.

Initially, I had both of these DCs running the system state backups to a shared network folder on a Windows 7 computer, this computer had a routine that would push this data once received over to an external hard drive for offsite storage. Doing this would work on the non PDC and sometimes on the PDC. But eventually, after a few nights of running ok, the PDC backup would fail, and all future attempts at running the scheduled backup would fail. The hung job could not be canceled via either the GUI nor command line, even though the latter would say it had been...it wasn't. The server would have to be restarted in order to get the backups to run again or to be able to interact with the scheduled backup wizard. The error was something like the network location is not available even though it was.

So I abandoned that location thinking the windows 7 20 connection limit could be the issue and re-targeted towards a NAS. Now the NAS solution always fails for both DCS, but of course in a unique way different from the previous. The initial job run will fail throwing up the following error...

"The backup operation that started at...has failed with the following error code '0x807800C5' (There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set)...please blah blah blah...nothing helpful etc."

When you look at the backup location, it has backed up about 8 GB of data (which as a side note is way more than the 700MB that the old server 2003 backup system states used to do)

The the following days since this first failed backup, subsequent errors are different, but consistently the following error...

"The backup operation that started at...has failed with following error code '0x8078014D' (There was a failure updating the backup for deleted items.). Please find small Jade monkey that corresponds with useless hex code or slay a dragon...etc"

Things of note, the jobs are running at 1am and 2am for each DC, I have moved the AV scans up to 3am so they don't mess with the backups. The NAS share is hidden, but has no issues writing to. Permissions are domain admins.

Thanks a lot for the help :-)

My initial thought was that you were having a fairly common problem with a sleeping destination not waking fast enough; but, searching found this thread which claims that non-present storage controllers confuse the VSS service causing the 0x8078014D error:http://networkadminkb.com/KB/a467/how-to-fix-windows-2008-r2-system-state-backup-fails.aspx

If that is not it, what events are being listed?

I have had very similar problems and to me the key thing in your description is "failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes" so that point to an issue with what it is trying to backup and not where it is trying to backup to. The only I have been able to remedy this was to stop the all the backups I have scheduled and re-create it and 9 times out of 10 that fixes it. I have had similar issues on Hyper-V and trying to backup VMs and their volumes.

Preliminary this looks like a Microsoft bug of some sort. See the following links.

Super long forum post (that of course goes off on tangents, but mostly stays on topic). I have it jumped to the last page...
http://backup766.rssing.com/chan-12721360/all_p82.html

Then a Microsoft Hotfix that was as far as I can tell is not included in Automatic updates and was release last year...
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2920193/en-us

Now being a "great" (not) year and a half for automatic Microsoft updates and the worry about having to dodge potential resume generating events every Tuesday, I am especially trepidatious about installing this KB2920193. It is not pushed out to WSUS servers automatically as far as I can tell and its requires you to enter in your email address in order to downloaded, with messages on the page "only install for OS's that are experiencing this problem" and these being domain controllers.

I am wondering if anyone has experience installing this on domain controller? If it fixes the problem and if it causes additional issues?

Thanks

Thanks for the assistance, I had given up on being too technocratic about the problem and simply decided to do as you said, deleting the scheduled job and recreating a new one. This got the job running again on the DC that was having the issue initially but not the other one that was running fine. Anyway, I will rinse and repeat the process until they both stabilize (which I am hoping they do).

Microsoft needs to QA this product a lot more. Hopefully they will release a windows update for this as apposed to whatever that current potential fix they have would be classified as.

Thanks again

I agree MS needs to work on this and hopefully they will soon

Identify PCs on MAN that have a Static IP Address

Identify PCs on MAN that have a Static IP Address

We have a large number of sites (50+) with 1000's of PCs.
Some people have set a Fixed IP address for their PCs (mostly Windows 7)
We want to ensure that only DHCP is used.

How can I search across multiple subnets and find any PC that has a fixed IP address?

We just cant physically visit each PC. We want someway of scanning the subnets to find them.

Is this possible?

Check you DNS manager enteries, for each subnet, you will be able to see each PC with fix IP.

You could anable loggin on the DHCP server, to check which IPs were distributed by DHCP. After one day compare the DHCP log with the machines (IPs) online and the ones that does not have a DHCP server log entry have fixed IPs.

If a short service interruption in the network is ok, you can trigger new DHCP requests by all hosts, just by power down the switch for a few seconds. Afterwards windows re request the IP via DHCP if DHCP is enabled.

Emmanuel,
Im not sure what you mean.
I cant see any differences in the Windows DNS server entries between a PC with a fixed or DHCP address.

Andreas,
I had a look, and yes that will work.

I was hoping for a more automated way of doing this. Rather than trying to manually match IPs.

Ive decided that using PSEXEC from SysInternals to force a ipconfig /renew and outputting the results to a file will give me the information

psexec.exe -h \"IPADDRESS" ipconfig /renew >output.txt

A fixed IP will give me this result.

Windows IP Configuration

The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for
this operation.

To do this right, I will create a batch file that will put the Host Name and IP address in the output first before the IPconfig /renew results.

Using PSEXEC means I can script a solution, rather than manually look at logs.

Recover a Profile

Recover a Profile

Good Afternoon,

We have a user who we recently had to recreate their user profile on their machine for.

We did the usual, rename to .old and change the registry key. Logged in fine to the new account, but then...

We went to copy the contents of the old profile across but the folders were all empty. If you look at the properties of the folder, it states there is 49GB in there.

We've tried unhiding the attributes, hidden folders, etc. We've also tried Recuva but still no luck.

Any information would be much appreciated!

Kind Regards,
Emily

Hi Emily,

Try logging into the machine as local administrator or an account with sufficient privelages.

Then right click the profile .old folder click properties go to security then advanced and owner, proceed to take ownership of all subfolders click the check box to do so, make sure in the main window you are using your local administrator account to do so and click apply.

This should give you access to the content.

Also what error do you get when you try to access the folders? are the folders visible?

Hi wannabecraig,

Thanks for your reply, I have taken ownership of the folder as local admin as you suggested, however it still doesn't allow me to see the files within the folders.

There are no error messages when I access the folder, I can get into the folder but nothing is visible.

Do you have any other ideas as to what I can try?

Thanks
Jordan

Hey,

Try go tools -> folder options -> view make sure the following settings are enabled.
show hidden files
show protected operating system files

I really don't get how there not visible here.
Download treesize free and have a look at the folder through this, this should show you where the 50GB of files are located.

Also try using a command prompt CD into the folder and do a DIR, run the command prompt as administrator and while logged on as local admin.

Check the event log system section, right click it filter for only errors, warnings check for hard disk errors. any errors referencing disks.

Also what version and service pack level of windows is this?

Great information.

Something strange just happened with a server 2008 R2

I am able to ping other devices on the network either by ip addres or by dns name. works fine.

But, when I use windows explorer or try to reach shares using \servername or \ip address I get name not found on network.

Also, when I try browsing the network nothing shows up.

Run TCP/IP Reset:
Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator
Then netsh int ip reset c:resetlog.txt
Also, ipconfig /flushdns followed by net stop dnscache followed by net start dnscache
Then restart the Server (need a convenient moment).

I ran the commands and restarted the server. no improvement on the problem.
Scared me because it removed the server ip address in the ip4 config

Also, I can not find the log/txt file.

Are you trying to use multiple network cards?

You might also consider updating the LAN drivers for the NIC.

the nics are trunked...and it seems to be working fine.

As I said I can ping servers on the network by ip and unc...I just can't view them and connect to their shares.

Also windows firewall is totally disabled and not running

I am working on a clients PC and there are two folders that I cannot delete. I am logged in as the administrator and resetting the permissions still doesn't allow me to delete those two folders.
How do I forcibly take control of them so that I can delete them and all the files underneath those two folders?

What error message do you get when you attempt to delete these folders?

What error message do you get when you attempt to delete these folders?

Can you make yourself the owner of the folders, then change permissions and finally delete?

access denied on lots of the files underneath those two folders.
I've also tried Takeown /R /F C:Temp and that didn't reset them
BTW, the two folders are in C:Temp

OK, here is something to try.
1. Download PsExec.exe from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897553.aspx.
Boot into Safe Mode to ensure nothing is accessing the files in the folder.
Move PsExec to C:Temp
Open a command prompt with Administrator Privileges and CD into C:temp.
Run: psexec -s -i cmd.exe, this installs a temporary service which will open a command prompt under LOCAL SYSTEM account. The service will be automatically deleted after you exit from the psexec prompt.
Run: ATTRIB -R -S -H
Run: TAKEOWN /F /R /D Y, this will set the Administrators group as owner, it recurses all folders and files in the folder.
To give the Administrators group full control rights, run ICACLS /grant administrators:F /T, the /T indicates that this operation is performed on all matching files and directories below the directories specified.

This process may take a few logoff/logon or reboots to catch every file and folder.
